LIFE SAVINfl SERVICE Annnnl Report/ of (lie Superintend- ent—A y<!«r'« Record of Storm*. Tfio report of tne General Superintendent of the Life Saving Service says that taenum- bar of disaster\ to documented vessels within the fluid [of station operations daring the year was 323. There woro on board these vessels 8,720 tiersons, of whom 2,699 were saved and twonty-sovon lost. The num- ber of shipwrecked' persons who received succor at the stations was 807, to whom 2,000 days' relief in tho aggregate was afforded. The estimated value of the vessels involved in the disasters was tiASaJOO, and that of tholf cargoes $2,078,805, making tho total value of tho proporty imperilled $0,503,136. Of this amount *5,O73,078 was saved and $1,42(1,037. lost. Tho number of vessels total- ly lost was 88, In eddition to -tho foregoing there were during the year 145 casualties to smaller craft, such as sailboats, etc., on which there * wore 848 persons, 840 of whom woro saved and two lost. The property involved in those in- stances is estimated at $111,420, 61 which't08,a50 was saved and $18,170 lost.' In addition to persons saved from vessels there were thirty-six other* rescued who hod fallen from wharves, piore, etc., who would have perished without the help of the life-caving crows. The number, violence and destructiveness of the storms which occurred during the year exceeded the record of any previous year since the goneral extension of the service to tho sea and lake coasts. In one storm there wero no less than thirty shipwrecks within tho scope of the operations of the service, and in a single day, January 0, there wero twenty-three. The sorvit.e, however, did not Call to match its previous record of offoctivoness In saving life and property/ The number of casual- ties was greater by twenty-oight than that of anv Tormor year, jot the loss of life Is fifteen less than the average, and although the voxels and cargoes to- tally lost wore twenty more than in any for- mer year, thO'nmount of proporty lost was only about $65,000 greater than the average of tho precoding years, while the amount saved is increased by nearly $2;000,000. At the cliso of the lost fiscal rear the Life Saving establishment embraced 311 stations, 105 being on the Atlantic, thirty-eignton the lakes, seven on the Pacific and one at Louis- ville, Ky. THE NATIONAL BANK& Some Figures From the Comptroller of tho Currency's Report. William L, Trenholm, Comptroller of tho Currency, says in bis annual report that in all 3.8J0 national backs have been organized, of whIpb%8CSoreoowsinoperiitlori, Oltboso 174 havo been organized duringthe past year, with a capital: of $21,000,000, bonds $3,7p6,r 000, and circulation $3,900,000. Twenty-foUr banks went into voluntary liquidation during the year, one ceased to exist by oxpi- ration of charter, and eight failed. The failed banks have an aggregate capita! of $050,000, surplus and undivided profits ¥201,000, and liabilities $1,800,000. The creditors of two of these banks have been paid in full, prin- cipal and interest. Since the beginning of the system in 1888 only 112 national banks have failed. Of these 36 have paid their creditors in full, and 20 have paid interest besides, fifteen in full and 5 in part. The total number of shares of national bank stork is over7,000;000; total sharehold- ers, 223,000. The contraction in national bank circula- tion during the year exceeds $56,000,000. The aggregate deposits in the banks have in- creased from $522,000,000 in January, 1886, to 81,172,000,000 in October, 1880, whileloans and discounts have risen from $500,000,003 at the former-date to $1,443,003,000 at the latter date. Fifty thousand tons of soot are taken from London chimneys in a year. It is estimated to be worth $203,000 and is used as a fertili- zer, half a ton to an acre. The cotton crop will be a little less than 6,500,000 bales, which is ; not quite so large as iiiot-of 18S5j but-ample for the demand with- out a decided advance in the price. THE total nnmber of blast furnaces in this country, in blast November 1, was 312, with a weekly capacity of 122,6:11 tons of pig, with 272 furnaces, with a weekly capacity of 63,409 tons \out of blast. •INOHAMTOM.
