THE GOVEBNOB'3 PEOOLAMATION. t By virtue of the authority vested In,me by tno people of the state of New 1 York, I hereby design- ate Thursday, tho 2Sth of November, Instant, ds a day of'thanksgiving- and prayer to Almighty Ood, Let there be thnnfcsglvlBg for tbe abundant harvest and the blessings Of health and peace, with which the year has been crowned, let there be prayer for continuance of all the tender mercies, and tbe watchful care which have been divinely granted to us In tbe past. As we rev- erently gather In our churches and cheerfully surround the firesides of our homes, In love of country and of kindred, with songs and rejoic- ings, let there be praise to the Lord. And not In name only, but In deeds of kindness and ac- tive good will to those less favored than our- selves, sbould our thanksgiving be made mani- fest. Thus shall voice and heart, and hand ap- propriately unite In a tribute of praise. Doneatthecapltol, In the city of Albany, this fourth day of November, In tho year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty-six, By the governor: DAVIB B. HIM,. WirxuM G. BICE, Private Secretary. Gon. N, M, Curtis is mentioned as a candidate for Speaker of the next legis- iature, His many friends in this district » vand in other districts of St, Lawrence, ,»ywou!d be pleased to sen him in such a po- sition. It has been said that, the Gen. is very uncommunicative in regard to wheth- er he will make a canvass for such honors. J'fis tine abilities dud long experience well ./fits him for the Speaker's desk and in our s* opinion he would make an excellent $pei»ker. The following, taken from the Ogdens- burg Advance, tells of a inalUrial condition of the political atmosphere of a town that contains the only city of which our county can boast. Somebody is to blame. Sonic one or possibly many of the members of the po- litical parties must have been offering money for votes in the past or men would not be schooled to expect a price for their votes now: \The recent election had the most demoralizing effect on the purchas- able vote of this town of nny election we have held in years. There are nearly a thousand men in the town of Oswegrttchie who will be found ready to dispose of their votes for cash or its equivalent. Every thinking person, even the men who buy these votes, recognize the fact that it is one of the worst features of our repub- lican form of government. The practice is prevalent, not only among the poor and ignorant, but also among men in easy circumstances and of fair intelligence. The importunities of tbe \floaters\ were without avail November 2rid, however, as not a single dollar, as far as we can learn. jj'as spent for votes. One old chap who .drove Jn several miles from the country to vote jn f,be second ward dis- trict wanted teg 4°l/nrs for his vote in the morning, but dropped tp half that amount utter dinner, He hung ground the polls all the afternoon, dropping hjs price every half hour, Jill he got ij; down, to twenty.- five cents. Not being able to find a purr .chaser, he votpd a republican bullpt jjjst before the polls closed. BANE. In the stilt ot the town of German Flats vs, She supervisors of Herkimer county, In regard to the support of its pauper in- sane, Judge Van of the supreme court has filed his decision dismissing the writ and holding thai each toten k by law chilrge- nble with the expense of maintaining its indigent insane, an important decision, as being the first judicial interpretation of the statute on this mtbjeet.—St. Lawj-ettce Herald. Now and then wc hear it said that tem- perance must De koptp.iit ot politics. But if temperance is kept out then the saloon must be kept out also. That the saloon is already in politics no one who relids at all can have any doubt. During tiie late political canviisx P. J. Jgit/gernld of Troy, president of the State Wine, Boer and Liquor Dealer's Association, sent out cir- culars to all its members urging them to support Judge Peckhnm for the\ Court of Appeals bench, ''because Judge Daniels, the Republican candidate, if not a pro- nounced Prohibitionist, strongly .sympa- thizes with that movement and is a total obstainer himself.\ These liquor men are found voting solidly against all candi- dates suspected of holding temperance views or cherishing temperance princi- ples. Why should not temperance men be equally careful whom they support for office? If the liquor men have less virtue they seem to possess more wisdom than do most temperance men.— Lmmille (Times. The hearty supp-ni of the people at the' polls given General Curtis for Member of Assembly shows 'conclusively that the people are with him and for him, and that his legislative record has the approv- al of the voters, J3vcn in those towns where he might expect, the thosfc opposi- tion, he stood well up with the ticket and in many wetir ahead. ~~Norwood Mvn.
