EDITOR, I see in ypuf last issue that some would-be nobs and fish cranks have been destroying property found in Black Lake, by burning. It appears strange that a country that has enjoyed free institutions so long, should go bacK to despotism. A Russian coining to this country would think he had been lost and wandered back home, or ha'' come to a country cursed with the same laws he was fleeing from, a country where men are persecuted, fined, and im- prisoned and property burned for following an ancient and honorable calling (see St. Luke 5-3 to 7) that a few would-be na- bobs can have little better pastime. An- gling is but a pastime, often used as an ex- cuse for a drunken debauch, such as the Theresa fish club enjoyed at Rossie last year, in some out of the way retreat. The ,law .is run most by whiskey in this vicinity. I do hot blame them for changing the name from constable to protector^ Fish were given to man' for food and not to satisfy the whim of aiew whiskey-pranks. Ann NABOB. GENERAL MEWS. An accomplished clerk in a dreg store iu Gouverneur has been detected in a series of thefts extending over a period of two years. Me was anxious to get on in the world and instead of spending the stolen money he quietly deposited it in the bank and maintained an appearance of strict in- tegrity. Besides having some valuable dia- monds, jewelry, etc., he had $1,050 in the bank. These were handed over to bis em- ployer, G-. L. VanNamee. School Commissioner Gr. A. Lewis Held an examination for the teachers of jHammond and vicinity in the graded school building at fiammond on Oct. 26. Mv. Lewis evidently believes in improving the schools by improving the teachers. Report says the questions grow a little more dif- ficult with each examination. . The hay had been in the freight house only a few days and w-'is wait- ing for shipment. The building was only parrly destroyed by the fire. Loss, about $40,000.
