There are at present about thirty de- faulters from this side the bf.rder in the city of Montreal alone. Among them are Dempsey, DeLacy, Sayles and Kirk (the four boodle aldermen of New York): John Keerian, the \Bismark\ of New York; politics; ex-Beading Clerk Alaloney. Hoexter, the notorious New York insolv- ent, who took $150,000 of his creditors' money; Chas. Watlers, the Baltimore! bank clerk; Bartholomew, the New En- gland bank president and Samuel L. Goldstein, the run-away jeweller, who peddled his wares in this vicinity for sev- eral years. Of what earthly benefit can such char- acters be to the city of Montreal or to Canada? la what way is the United States to profit by harboring a similar class of refugees from across the linos? It is only putting a premium on dishonesty. It is holding out the largest kind of in- ducements to officials to steal fortunes by providing them the means of escape. All of this is admitted, and still this state of affairs is permitted to continue. Is this country waiting for Canada to take the initiative? It would seem so. Owing to the greater wealth and popula- tion of the U. 8. a much larger amount of money is carried into Canada than what comes from Canada here. Canada has, on two occasions, tried to secure an extradition treaty; but congress, fearing that the Canadian rogues might get a lit- tle the best ot the bargain, wanted time to consider, and apparently forgot all about it. \We would suggest to the Hon. A. X. Parker that he jog the memory of con grcss in the matter. He has an oppor- tunity to add to his championship of pure butter the honor of pioneering the cause of public honesty. Such a course would justly entitle 50 r. Parker to anoth- er term in congress. M IMPOETAHT W T. Suit has'been brought in the Supreme Court to set aside the assignment of Jas. Dority, of Hossie, also to set aside two mortgages made to Clarence and Charles Dority and to remove other fraudulent , ,,jb.eirs against the property. The amount . M-proiperty transferred is about $7,000. ' The \suit is entered in the name of Lorenzo Smith, Of Gouverneur. The creditors are N. J. Cooper and J. N. Ormiston, of Ox bow; and I. C. Hinsdale, of Antwerp. Attorneys for plaintiff, M. A. Hildreth, of antwerp, and E. H. Neary of Gouv- erneur. Kellogg and Morris of Ogdens- burg, for defendants THEY GOT OFF EASY. quitted. Tho excursion train through to New York arrived at this depot on time, last Tuesday, The train consisted of two baggage cars, six coaches and ono draw- ing room car, ana judging from the troub- le the engine had in drawing the tram out from the depot we concluded that quite a number weie improving their op- portunity of visiting tho great city. About twenty-five people from Ham- mond joined the excursion. The follow- ing are the parties: Win, Kodger and wife, Henry Donald and wife, N. I. Young and wife, David Moore and wife, Rev. I. Jenkins and wife. Dr. H. K. Kerr and wife, Win. TWoore and wife, S. W. Tilton and wife, John Outhburt, Miss Addie Kodger, Andrew Mills, Thos. Kerr, H. L. Selleck and wife, Mrs. Robt, Donald and J. Faichnov. Stealing Beans. Black Lake has a case of bean stealing. A few nights ago a nitm named John Shavv drove a horse and wagon to the barn of Philip Walroth, took two bags of beans and drove off with them. The next day he disposed of his \produce\ ut Briar Hill. Mr. Walroth missed his beans and began looking up their mysterious disap- pearance. One of the bags must have had a hole in it for beans were Kcatterud along the road, and by this means Shaw was followed and discovered. Shaw is a man of about M> years of age and has been a resident of the place only a short time. He will not be prosecuted. $2,000 FOR BOADS. Ihe Road Commissioners of Hammond, ask the tax payers for S3,000 for fixing the Long Crossway, building a new jl/ar- vin bridge and improving the condition of the roads generally. This is what the ADVENT ISEK has been contending for and we are glad that the commissioners have made a move in the matter. As the town meeting called for the pur- pose of voting the appropriation has not been sufficiently advertised, written-noticea only liaising leen pouted up, we voluntarily give the matter publicity so that the peo- ple will know both the date and the ob- ject for which the money is asked. The long crossway and tins jl/arvm bridge both need attention and if there is any money left after these arc made pass- able it can be profitably used on the roads. The special meeting for voting on the appropriation will beheld Nov. 4th. The Big Apple Ohampionshij. Mr. E. A. Donald, of this village, has taken the championship from Mr. Billings in the big apple business. Jtfr. Donald's apple is also of the Baxter variety and girths 14 inches and weighs 17 ounces. Mi: Billings' apple girths the same as jrfr. Donald's, but is half an ounce lighter. The three Carle brothers, who murder- ed Albertus Carr, in the vicinity of Brocli- ville, a full account of which appeared in last week's issue, have had their trial and have escaped wonderfully well.
