A BBMl'S Bit El Coyote, a Notorious Outlaw, Surprised While Asleep. Killed With Eight Followers % Mexioan Troops, A •pedal dispatch from Lampasas, Mexico, details the klilingof \El Coyote,\the notori- ous Mexican bandit chief. Captain Jose Maria Herrora and seventy me n o f th e Tenth Mexican Cavalry surrounded the out- la w and thirty of his band a t S p. it., while they were enjoying a n afternoon nap a t the Santo Domingo ranch. The horses were staked out, guns stacked, and the buudita bad their shoes off, when th e soldiers quietly approached with drawn swords and began the work o f extermination. The bandits wero taken completely b y surprise, but they made ft desperate hand-to- hand fight, and twenty of them fought their wa y through the ranks of the troops. Sigh t wore killed and throe wouudol. Amon g the killed are Colonel Juan Rodriguez Martinez, better known as E l Coyote Captain Marnier Perez Vela and Lieutenant Paulino Ghavera The tr. ops lost one killed and one wounded. They captured fifteen horses, seventeen sad- dles and twonty carbines. Captain Herrora was heartily congratulate 1 from alt rjnai tars for the splendid results of his expedition, It is a mutter of general Eiirprise that tho wily Coyote, who has s o long-been u terror on the border, should have beau caught nap- ping. When the troops closed i n o n the slumbering bandits EL Coyote was the first to awake. Ho fought like a demon and triedt o rally his men, but his jgroat power and' his herculean form went down pierced by a dozen sabers amid the exultant yells of the, victorious troopers. Th e bodies of th e eight bandits were buried where they , fell. The death of E l Coyote caused intense excitement i n No w Laredo, his former home and the pres- ent home of his family. H e bad many friends a t Lampasas, wh o claim that hepos- sessed man y good qualities. However, there is a general reeling, of relief,, as i t i s believed that bis death trad the recent) defeat of Mauricio Cruz, will bring about a state of peace on the border that will not bo dis- turbed for some time t o come. There were about S00 delegates on the floor, Henry W. Blair, of Ti^ayr Hampshire, taking the chair as temporary Chairman, said: \We are bore for th e destruction of the rum traffic throughout this country and throughout the world. I- think I speak the sentiment of the convention when X say that as between free rum and lo w license, w e are in favor of high license; that a s between high license- and prohibition, w e are in. favor ofVohibition.' , r Ex-Senator William Windom,ontakingthe Chair as Permanent Chairman, said: \We are herd under the call of true and loyal Republicans desiring, through that party, to accomplish what w e believe will bo a great good for the American people, The issue is as grave as any that the Repub- licans over haa t o mdet in the post Itre - :resclved itself into the' question whether the saloon wa s to dominate the politics of th e nation. Congress and of those States that have done so, in praviding for teaching the physiology ical effects of intoxicants in ou r public schools, and that w e earnestly recommend t o every State Legislature the enactment of such laws aeshall'provide for the thorough teaching of such effects to our children. Eighth—We demand that the Republican party, t o which w e belong, and whose wel- fare w e cherish, shall take a firm and decided stand, as the friend o f the home and the enemy of the saloon, i n favor o f this policy and ; these measures.
