Too soo n th e gri p of hi s fingers relaxed, and in spite o f hi s frantic efforts to maintai n hi s van - tag e the wolf got his jaws free and began t o us e them with terrible effect, when* a t las t a teamste r appeared o n the scen e and bega n to belabo r the monste r with a long hatchet. The wol f the n left his victim an d turned on th e new-comer , and with two successive rips tore hi s fac e almos t off. Minu s his cheeks , lips and nostrils, the unfortunate man staggere d out ofthe way ancl left theogre a t leisure to tur n his attentio n to a thir d adversary, the Muji k Jackolen , whom Peter's sister had in the meantim e summoned , fro m the next farmstead.
