On an e.stimated population of 8,699,643 the death rate was 16.1 per thousand. It was 16.3 for 1908. Pulmonary tuberculosis caused 13,- 948 deaths in 1900. In 1908 there were 14.347 and in 1907 14,431, yet the per centage of all deaths due to tubercu losis remains. Other death causes were; Pneumonia, 9,400; cancer, 7,034 (both increases); typhoid fever, 1,309 (decrease 68), low est ever recorded being only 15 per 100,000; violence caused 9,199 deaths; 1,490 were suicides. Woburn, Mass., Feb. 7.—Declaring that he had to kill President Taft, a giant known as Gardner, because no one can pronounce bis real name, is In a cell here to be examined for his sanity.
