BACHELORS A N D MAIDS^ Tbe Romans not only reward ed those who married, bat decreed penalties against thosr who re mained in a state of celibacy.— Fines were first levied on unmar ried men about the year of Roma 360 ; and when pecuniary forfeit- uce failed to enaure their obedi ence ^wbich was frequenf) to con nubial edicts, their contumacious neglect of tbe fair sex, was pun- nisbed by depredation from their tribe. Celibacy contined, howev er, to gain ground in Rome; and to counteract its effects, we find that, in tbe year 518 from tha foundation of tbe city, the censor* had recourse to the extraordinary- measure of obliging all the young* unmarried men to pledge them selves on oath to marry wi'bin * certain time. In Babylon an auc tion of unmarried ladie « ased to take place annually. The vir gins of marriageable age in every district were aatembled on a cer tain day of every year.
