Celibacy contined, howev er, to gain ground in Rome; and to counteract its effects, we find that, in tbe year 518 from tha foundation of tbe city, the censor* had recourse to the extraordinary- measure of obliging all the young* unmarried men to pledge them selves on oath to marry wi'bin a certain time.
