The Federal Government support price to the growers of potatoes in Suffolk County will advance on Nov 1 from $2.95 a hundred pounds J or TJ S No. 1 grade , in new bags , FOB the shipping point, to $3.10. The Production and Marketing Administration of the U S Dept of Agriculture purchased a total of 7 , 138 carloads and truckloads of potatoes in Suffolk County from July 19 throug h Oct 26, to support the price to the growers. To Hike Support Price to $3.10 Supervisors I Continued from Page 1) lies and receipts , the county tax rate remains the same seven and one-half mills on each $.1 of equa- j lized assessed valuation. That has i been the rate since 1939. j Funds For Salary Increases j Increased appropriations for the salary accounts of the departments of the county government will make available funds for increased salaries of county employees. While the Board will not take action on salary increases until its December meeting, it is understood that dur- ing discussions of the subject in executive sessions of the Board that favorable consideration was given to granting employees in the lower brackets an increase in the same amount as their annual in- crements and those in the higher brackets an increase of 50 per cent of their annual increments, j For example , if an employee ' s an- 1 nual increment (increases that have | been made automatically for those j on the increment basis until the maximum salary of the position is attained) is $100 a year he or she would receive an additional $100 beginning in Jan 1 , 1949. There ! are many employees whose annual i ir.crcu.cr.u arc ,css n * ., \ . \\ . ^iuu, oumt- i employees are not on the increment I basis. j The proposed increases in salaries ! are not expected to meet with the j approval of the rank and file of! the employees , esneeiallv those in 1 the lower brackets. They had | hoped for a substantial increase in their salaries. The Suffolk County Chapter of the New York State Civil Service Emp loyees ' Assn , Inc , last winter requested that all county employees be paid the same amount in salar- ies as those employed b y the State of New York for like work and responsibilities , but the Board of Supervisors has thus far failed to take any action with respect to that request. The communication sent to the Board by the chapter is still reposing peacefull y in the files of the clerk of the Board of Supervisors in the Court House at Riverhead. If any salary increases other than for those on the annual in- crement basis are made by the Board , it is anticipated that such action will be taken upon the re- commendation of heads of depart- ments. Hold 4 Local Men in Miami Four youths who came to Miami to fo rm a robbery ring and fatten their pocketbooks were sitting it out Friday in the Miami city jail. Police arrested the quartet last Thursday when a raid on their apartment yielded seven guns , numerous blackjacks , knives and 200 rounds of ammunition. The raid came after one of the youths was arrested for speeding. Authorities identified the four as Francis Hart , 20; Sherman L'Hommedieu Jr , 22; John Farrcll , 18 , and Arthur Hufnager , 2 . 0. All four gave Bronx addresses. There are two young men named Sherman L'Hommedieu Jr , and Francis Hart who are residents of Riverhead and two young men namea John barren and Arthur Hufnager , who reside in a sum- mer colony development at Flan- ders. Detective Capt H G Howard said the eanc confessed six hold- ups in Dade and neig hboring Bro- ward counties in the iast three weeks , including the robbery of a group of guests at the home of Joseph Berlinger in Holl ywood , Fla. In that job , he said , they got $400 and shot Berlinger ' s maid , Marie Elzer , through the ear. The raid of the gang ' s apart- ment also turned up an unmailed letter which L'Hommedieu had written to a Bronx g irl friend. It told the youth' s story neatly. \This land is one bi g bank , \ the letter said. \There are lour of us working together here so between us we can make a pretty good liv- ing. \Everyone here has money and everyone carries a gun , so we have to be on our toes . So far no- body got shot yet. \The law here is very slow and the biggest part of it is very stupid. The real New York gunmen come down here and run the law in circles. \Before I leave here , I have a feeling I am going to kill my first man. So after that one the rest will come easy. \Every gunman and his brother will be here next month. There is at least 10 robberies every night. . . \ Authorities held the youths on open charges.
