Howell RIVERHEAD Phone tilt Exterminators Offer Advic e Special attention is called to the necessity for continued co-opern- tion by properly owners and tenants in Suffolk County in the warfa re tij;niii.it household mosquitoes (Cu- leN pipiens). Household mosquito breeding will , no doubt , begin somewhat earlier this year due to llio open winter. A few warm days will start this pest on its annual crusade ' against the health and comfort of every member of thc family unless necessa ry early pre- caution is used before the mosquito develops to thc winged stage. Herewith are a few simple rules that will prevent thc emergence of the pest in broods of troublesome proportions around the home: i Fiiiroinnte nil standing water. 2. Cover rain barrels with screen- ing. 3. Seal breaks and openings In cesspool cover and around sides. 4. Stock ornamental pools with fish. 5. Drain clogged roof gutters and fc Hat roofs. ft G. Keep cellars dry. P' . . 7. Stack pails , barrels , tubs and ». ^ i boxes upside down , ¦ e>' 8. Cut up old tires to prevent ' 4: their holding water. ^*J>. Bury, flatten or punch holes in all tm cans. 1( £ Pour waste oil on standing ;- ,, water that cannot be drained. » 77c household mosquito hides in die home during thc winter in such places as cellars , attics and closets. When the house becomes over- heated or if a few warm days oc- cur , these pests will awaken from their lethargy and become annoy- ing. It is a good plan lo get out the \flit gun \ and spray such places in the house once or twice during the cold weather and espe- cially in the early spring—right now , for instance , as this will kill off the post and prevent early egg deposits and thus eliminate thc pos- sibility of early breeding. About 29, 374 house-to-house in- g spections were made last year. Ap- T proximatel y 21 pe\ cent of tho places was found to have mosquito violations of one kind or another. This was an improvement over the previous year when violations were found to thc extent of 48 per cent. It is to be noted that citizens of our county are becoming more co- operative each year , but there is still much to be desired in this re- spect. In order to do this the house- holder should not only sec to it that the above mosquito violations are , corrected around their own places but also report to the Commission ' s office at Court House , Riverhead , any unusual mosquito annoyance experienced. The inspectors will follow \ 'up such complaints and de- termine the source of the mosquito breeding. If everyone will do tneir full duty in this connet-tion , an ideal situation will be obtained. Mosquito prevention will pay large dividends in health , comfort and economic improvement. Hawkins , Sur- rogate of Suffolk County, as guest speaker , addressed tho assembled members of the Yaphank Repub- lican Club at its regular meeting April 5 , at tho schoolhouse. Judge Hawi ins spoke interestingly con- cerning ihe economic and govern- mental problems that confront our nation today. Among his remarks , he expressed thc seemingly com- mon sense view that if the govern- ment would get out of business and stay out and stop hampering pri- vate capital and human initiative , better times for all would naturally follow In due time. The club will hold a card party on April 22 next , to which all arc cordiall y invited. There will be plenty of good music , games , re- freshments , and other wholesom e entertainment on this occasion as there are at all of the club' s meet- ings and other gatherings. While it is thc intention of the club to invite prominent guest speakers to address its meetings from time to time , its chief aim and purpose is to create a neigh- borly atmosphere of friendliness , good cheer , and social equality where any member of the com- munity and near communities may gather and mingle for their mutual enjoyment and benefit. The club already has a membe rship of 200 , which is probably the largest en- rollment per capita of population of any similar organization within a wide radius. Considering the short time the club has been in existence , thc officers and members from President Charles Herrmann down feel without appearing boast- ful that the club is to use a com- mon phrase , going strong, and it is their object to work tirelessly for the best interests of the com- munity and the Republican Party within the county and out.
