He knew that on him mi g ht depend the lives of many men and women and chil- dren of the friendly Dakotas. Through the tali prairie grass he guided his sure-footed little mustang and toward noon came to a swiftly running river. It had been raining for several days and the water was nearly overflowing the high banks. He dismounted and turned Pinto loose , knowing that the little animal would crop the grass quietly In the neighbor- hood and would come running when he heard his master ' s whistle. Little Indian had brought his lunch with him , and he sat down to rest and eat his dried buffalo meat and corn cake. He was thirs- ty, but the river had been to stirred up by the Hood that It was muddy and disagreeable looking, and Little Indian decided to wait until he could find a spring of clear water. When he was ready to go on , he whistled and Pinto came Immedi- ately, nuxzling his soft nose In lit- tle Indian ' s neck. The boy stroked the little mustang ' s ' head and then vaulted to its back. He rode to the brink of the river and as he looked at the raging yel- low torrent his heart almost failed him. It seemed to him that the waters , as they raced by, hissed defiance at him; and resentment filled him. He laughed , however , and shouted back his own defiance : \Do you think , O Mighty River, that you will hold back«the son of Big Chief? No , I will battle with vou!\ Poor Pinto dug his hoofs into the bank and refused to be ridden into the flood; but with whispers and encouraging pats little Indian calmed his trembling pony, and the plucky and devoted little animal stepped into the water. Almost im- mediately the current caught him and he was swept swiftly, down- stream. The boy slid from the pony ' s back to relieve his faithful friend of his weight, and together they awa.m ecross the river , carried downstream three feet for every one they mad* crosswise. The wa- ters foamed and swirled around them . Ailing their nostrils. When they were a little mere than half way over , Little Indian caught the roar of the cataract below. His heart ga ve a throb of fear. Could It be that the river was to be the victor . «ftfr »ll ? Tf they were caught In the terrible current near the waterfall , neither he nor Pinto would ever escape alive , he knew. \Help me , O Great Spirit , \ he prayed; and , as if in answer to the prayer , Pinto only a moment after- ward found foothold on a sandy bar that extended well out from shore. Almost exhausted , the boy and the mustang pulled themselves up on the bank. A little more, and they would have been sucked into the waterfall , but now they were safe on solid ground, and Little In- dian put his arm around the neck of his friend for a moment If it had not been for Pinto , the hoy knew he would never have been able to cross the river , and he wanted to express his gratitude to the strong little pony. To attempt to journey farther that day was out of the question , to Little Indian built a fire and camped for the night. He tethered Pinto , as he always did when he spent the night In the open , giving him a long enough tether to that he could crop grass in a wide cir- cle if he felt hungry. Before eating his own supper, or wanning him- self by the fire , however , he rub- bed the pony down with handfuls of dry grass. Then, wrapping him- self in his . blanket , he lay down with his feet toward the fire and fell asleep.
