'tGc • ^ All interesting instance of an in- dustry spending hundreds of thousands j>f dollars to educate the public to using less of its product and yet get better results; is revealed by the recent research work of the Portland Cement association. Concrete , today, is probably the most adaptable of all structural ma- terials and is used by the architect and builder for innumerable and widel y different purposes. In order that the quality of concrete work might be raised and the cost lowered , the cement industry in co-operation with the Structural Materials research laboratory at the Lewis Institute , Chicago , inaugurated an elaborate series of tests to find out just what effects would result from changes in the amount of sand and gravel , or stone , the amount of mixing water, etc., used in making concrete. The cement itself , is made in all the mills, in the United {states to a very exacting chemical formula fixed upon by the leading engineering so- cieties in co-operation with the Gov- ernment. With this as a starting point , hundreds of thousands of tests were made to find the effect of the other item previously mentioned. One of the most important * results of this research work was the dis- covery that concrete is ordinarily mixed far too wet , and that by the Use of less mixing water , stronger concrete can be made at a lowered cost. The practical application of this laboratory work on noted engineering structures like the Wilson dam at Muscle Shoals , and .the Delaware River bridge at Philadelphia , and by the engineering departments of lead- ing railroads just as the Pennsylvania and the \Big 4 , \ has fully justified these theories , according to engineers , who believe that the saving in cement resulting from a better control of the concrete will be a factor of increasing significance in lowering construction costs. Sayre Family Thomas Sayre , the first of the namo of Sayre to settle on eastern Long Island , was one of the original pro- prietors of Southampton. Some records give him as being there as early as May or June , 1040. iHls birthplace was Bedfordshire , England , about 1600. He was one of u band of dis&viiWrs who left England 1635 , coming to New England the same year. It is said he was a man of strong religious belief. The name Sayre should not be con- fused with any of like \ spelling \ or sound. The names Sayer and Sears are often thought to he the same hut this is not true; Sayer and Sears come from the word \Soothsayer '* and the founders of these families prob- ably gained fame and a name as soothsayers. Sayre is an occupation name. In early days the ancestors of the present Say res were assayers to . the i King. Holding a position of this nature was a very high honor as they passed on all precious metal taken by the King. They were very early «given the right to a coat of arms being, \Arms , i Gules , a chevron ermine between three [ sea gulls ; Crest, a cubit arm erect proper holding a dragon ' s head erased argent. \ The Sayre family did not belong to the Golfismith' s Company, the his - toric guild of Goldsmiths . The Sayres without doubt , had - the family name before 1400 , for it was in the time of Henry V , about 1420 , when the Stat- utes of Additions was passed. This statute provided that a man mig ht locally take as his family name the title of his estate, his business , or the town or place of his residence , etc. Family names were common bafore the Statutes of Additions came into effect as the people of England had used family mimes quite to some ex- tent as early as 1100.
