Virginia hospitality is • byword The old time country house , says Mrs. Roger A. Pryor ta \My Day, \ waa built of elastic material , capable ol sheltering any number of guests , many of whom remained all summer. In- deed , this was expected of them. \My dear sir , \ said the genial mas ter of Westorer to a departing guest who had sought shelter from a rain- storm , \ my deaf sir, do stay and pay us a visit\ The guest pleaded business that for- bade his compliance. \Well , well ,\ suld Major Drewry, \11 you can 't pay us c visit come for two or three weeks at least. \ \Week ends \ ware unknown in Vir- ginia , and equally ont of tbe question an Invitation limited by the host to prescribed days and 'hours. Some times a happy guest would Ignore time altogether and stay along from season to season. I cannot remember a par allel case to that of Isaac Watts , who , invited by Sir Thomas Abney to spend a night at Stoke Newtngton , accepted with great cheerfulness and stayed the rnt of his life , nearly forty years , bat I do remember that an invitation for on* night brought to a member of our family a pleasant couple who remained for years. Mozart' s Musical Memory. Mozart had a wonderful memory ot musical sounds. When only fourteen years of age he went to Rome to ns- sist iu the solemnities of holy vreefc. Immediately after bis arrival he went to the Sistine chapel to hear tbe fa- mous \Miserere \ of Allegri Being aware that It was forbidden to take or give a copy of this renowned piece of music , Mozart placed himself in a cor- ner and gave the strictest attention to the music and on leaving tho church noted down the entire piece. A few days afterward he beard It a second time and , following tbe music with his cv, -* i copy in his hand satisfied himself of the fidelity of his memory. The next day he sang the \Miserere \ at a concert, accompanying himself on the harpsic hord , and the performance pro- duced such a sensation in Rome that Pope Clement XIV . requested that this musical prodigy should be presented to him at once. Picturing th* Face. \Why do you photographers always photograph tbe left side of tbe face by preference?\ \Because it' s tbe best looking, \ was the prompt reply. \Tbe left side of the face Is always the more regular , and It always shows least the marks of time. \But , \ he continued , \If you want to bring out the real character of a face photograph tbe right side. There nature sets her print There the lines are bold and unmistakable. There every defect no less than every ex- cellence . Is stamped deep, \The left side, where everything !s softened down , for beauty. The right side , where everything is well rubbed in , for character. Those are the por- trait artist' s two chief rules. \ —New y^rk Tribune. ' H»r Importance). Herbert Spencer once told this story of a woman of bis acquaintance : \Vain as well as vulgar minded , she profess- ed to have a high admiration of Shake- speare and was partial to reading his plays aloud and considered that she declaimed th» speech** extremely well. Ou one occasion , after eulaiglun upuii her reverence for him , abo ended by saying: 'Ah , I often wish that he were alive and that I had him here, now we would enjoy one another ' s conver nation T\ Sura to Know. \T understand that you have bought some remarkably expensive gowns here In Paris. \ \Yes , but what' s the use?
