A range of country along the Penobscot, thirty miles in length on both sides of the river, is represented oS a scene of generid conflagratiou, In the vicinity of the heaviest fire the ground actually trembles, and the roaring of the fire, which sounds like thuu der^has been heard at the distance of 12 of 15 miles. A number of houses, barns, cattle, «fec. have been destroyed. Even fish and birds Jmve not escaped from the devouring element. Twentybass, Weighing IVom 20 to 40 pounds, und nuieerous small fish were found dead on the shorfe o f the Piscataquis. Four, out of six, new two-story brick build ings, whkh had been erected in the city of New- York, lately tumbled down and became a heap ofruins. The Carpenters w'ere at work on the roof at the time-, and were precipitated among the ruins. Seven men were dug out, six ol* whom were taken to the Hospital dreadfully mangled. One man, perceiving that the build ings were giving Way, jumped down forty feet into a pile of saud unhurt. They W’cte con- ^structed in the most shameful manner. Orders ^ have been given by the corporation to demo- iish the remaining two. * Jlfrican Sheep .—Thirteen sheep, of the broad tail or Tunisian breed, have been imported at New-York, having been procured from the in terior of Africa. They are said to he very va luable, both for the wool and flesh. Tho tail has a very singular appearance, being in some instances from eight to ten inches broad, and makes, wh6n cooked, excellent food. A pair of these sheep are intended for Gen. Van ilcns- selaer o f Albany. The sales at auction in the city of New-York, in the months o f April, May and June, amount ed to ^6,900,000. The duties paid by the auc tioneers, on these sales, into the treasury of this state, were ^76,100. One auctioneer paid a- lone $18*758. A boat has boen built in Chatauque county in this state, upwards of 500 miles from the ocean, for the purpose of being employed as an oyster boat on the sea board, anefis only waiting ibr the completion of the canal, to commence her first trip to New-York. Mr. Walker, one of the proprietors of the New-York Daily Advertiser, has brought over from Loudon one of “ Napier’s Imperial Trint- ' ing Machines” which will work oiF 2000 sheets in an hour. It is tobe used for pruiting that pa per and the American. 2760 daily, and 1800 semhweckly papers, arc issued from the olfice of the N.'Y. Daily Advertiser. The sentence of the Court Martial, cashier ing Lieutenant Wolbert, has been approved by the President of thd U. S. and the name of (hat officer has, accordingly, been struck from the rolfe of the navy» Uieutenant Ramage has been fully acquitted «f the charges preferred against him, and the Court Martial has acyourned sine die. The Court has prduounced, in unequivocal language, the charges ta be “utterly false, groundless and naaiicious.” A meritorious officer, who has bomej|“ ample testimonial of former good cha racter,” has thus been subjected to all the in convenience and hardship of a trial by a milita ry tribunal, through the malicious prosecution of a subaltern ofliccr^ * The following is the judgment of the Court, pronounced itt f ie case of X«ieqt. Ramage: The Court having examined and duly deli berated ^ o n the charges and specifications, the evidence and defence, U) the case of Lieut. James l^amaga, proceeded this day to pro- flounce its judgment upon the same.* The Court is ofopiiiion* that ,ne one of the Specifications of cither of the charges Is proved, and the Court does, therefore, pronounce and adjudge that the said Lieut. James Ramage V net guilty of any om of the said charges. T h e Court is of opinion, tfiat these charges are utterly false, groundless, and malicious, and it does most honorably acquit the accused^ of iiavjng afforded even the idightest, foundation for the calumnies witb which Ms reputation has been so bjafiously indwantonly assailgd by the pfosoenfor. His Excellency Cornelius P. Van Ness, has been re-elected Governor of Vermont by an al most unanimous.vote. Tho Mexican Sun states, that a circular has been sent by his Holiness to the Arch bishops and Bishops of America. It received the ap* probation of His Catholic Majesty, after consul tation with the Supreme Council of the Indies. Tho Pope dwells on tho injury done to t.he cause of religion, by the crime of rebellion, and the punishment which will result. He then ex horts, the clergy to display, and illustrate to their congregations, the distinguished qualities of his beloved son Ferdinand, whose solid vir tue induces him to'prefer the success of religion and the happiness of his subjects, to personal grandeur. Sr. Michelena, the Mexican Envoy near His Britanic Majesty, in communicating the circu lar to his government, says that he had taken, occasion to express .to tho Apostolic See, the true sentiinelSts of the government and people of Mexico, that whilst they were disposed to. pay every respect to the head of the Church, in a question of independence and liberty, they would not confer with any temporal jyoxeer about their form of government, voluntarily adopted, or conseiit to lay aside’their hatred of a tyrant, w'hiose supposed virtues are commended in thp circular.
