The past week has been a disappointing ,J oue in the cheese trade, The improvement previously manifested seems to have lost its force, und the market is closing the week with little animation on the part of lhe'buyers. Much of the cheese which has arrived at New York during the past ten days hm been more or less affected by the heat. | There is an urgent need of more protection to the cheese during the season of warm weather from the time it leaves the factory yntil it reaches its fingl desti- nat.on. Some of the finest cheese areotten sold at a low price because they have been injured by the hot weather in tramat. Many of the Jefferson county | fuctorymen procured canvas covers last season to be used on the wagons delivering cheese to the depot and the plan should be genern'ly adoptel wherever the factory is not located in the iminediate vicinity of | the depot. Keep the Rose Foliage Green. The russ are blossoming in the gardens, the most precious of June's gifts. These are but the earlier varieties and aro transient in their bloum, and the regal flowers grow mere and more splendid as the «rason advances An authority an their culture gives this advice about caring for them Npthing adds so much to the beauty and } charm of a ruse os on abundance of its own fae foliage, preeerved in- clean and vigorous health. The bushes. therefore, should be thrasbed daily, frum now on- ward. with clear cold water, either from the hase or a ay ringe of free and generous delivery, appiving -it especially to the under sides of the leaves where thrips and at ber pests lurk This is a cheap and very effective means of keeping all such in- truder in cheek, for besides being obnox- tous to them, it disladges hosts of them from the bushes, and thus relietes the plants fora time, at least, from their ravages If from insufficient caro or other cause the feliage has become hadly infested ur eaten, an Ammiediato should be given them of white tells-ham, mixed aith scap sais to make dt adhere. This wall generally put the cnemy to rout, and after M hours can bo washed off with the shower-bath, w hach will then, if faithfully followed up through the blooming season, keep the foliage in good condition There is, however, ane exception ; the rosebug, when he comes, will yicld to no other known rrmedy than hand -picking. Take a hasin of water and go out in the cool of the early morning the most delicious part of the day, by the way, when one should be out ameng the ruses on all actounta- and pr k off these long-legged marawlers w hile they are ton sutl to fiy away They will be found mest abundant upin the w bite nea-which are a good trap for mere of less, aitd are extravagantly fond of que bo ssems of the grape aise thich should obe wate hel therefore, in the inter- ests of the coming ctop The Advance in Lemons, New York Bulletin The cold weather at the beginning of the season having put hack the lemon crop, receipts of the fruit at this port until n comparatively recent date foi far below the average and at one time there was a shortage of | fully | lon nun as compared with the arrivals here for the on rrvspending pericd last year, One or two nes atul fast boats Fave heen post mto the trade this season | and conse- quently the shortage has been to an extent made up. so that at the present time we are not more: than 40,000 of | 45.000 boxes behind the receipts for the seasen | of 1M to this date, and the indications are that before the end of the season the «hortage Ail] be comple tety covered T anl s ithin the past week or ten days the consuming de- mand was much below the average. First, by cultivat- , ing and hoeing the surface soil; followed at once by an application of green clover, conurse manure, straw or some other Coarse |- hitter. Clover , is bst, being free from noxious weeds and rich in plant-food, Mulch should be pluced aroung each | hill four or five inches deep, }paving about three feet between the rows for cultivation during the summer, This treatment retains moisture near the surface, prevents the growth of weeds, keeps the berries clean enriches the soil and is the only pmfllcai sateguard against drouth. When new canes of the blackberry and raspberry are 15 inches high, nip off about two inches of the tip; this will check the upward growth of the plant, cause several new branches to grow and greatly increases the bearing surface of the canes. AD weak cunes should be cut out, This treatment fin-w a low stm'kf well-formed bush, not inble to damage by severe storms, The new growth of grupes should also b; slxulilened from time to time by pinchin ick, A well-cultivated blackberry bush will usually set more fruit than it can mature. The quality ahd size of berry may by greatly improved without reducing quan- tity, by trimming off one-fourth or one- third of the fruit stem, This is also true uf the plum, grape and many other fruits. New strawberry beds should not be al- lowed to bear fruit the first season. Pick off all buds and blooms. The maturity of seed is very exhausting, and if allowed to grow, will greatly reduce vigor of new ants. For this season strawberry plants rom old beds should never be used. The best preventive of disease among berry plants is clean cultivation and severe gflm'wmrfulix currants and gum will appear on the lower leaves soon, after the fruit forms. The remedy for this pest is so simple, , there is no cause for neglect» Ing its use: One ounce of white hellebore dissolved in two gallons of water, applied with ig or brush bruum, wh worms fitst app¥ar, will exterminate therm. Two or possibly three applications may be necessary. Paris green is also used in the samo manner. Farm and Market. Charles G. Banister, of this city, has prorchised of Henry Stevens & Son, of Lacona, their Shetland stallion, Major, for breeding purposes. All dairymen will await with interest the experiment to be made at the Manns- ville choese factory noxt week of making cheese separately from two wats of milk, une testing low in butter fat and the other high The milk from the two vats is to rece ive precisely the same treatment in he- ing manufactured into cheese, and the; roduct of each vat of milk is to be sold n the market on its film“ The dairies entered in the test aro those of Henry Stevens, of Lacuna, and Messrs. Porter, Ureneil and Mattison, of Pierrepont Manor. W. W. Hall, E. A. Ayors and C. 8. Kellogg, of the state dairy department, are firmed to assist in making the test. A blight is affecting the. maple trees in the vicinity of Camden. The leaves are covensl with lice. The first boine-grown strawberries made their appearance in Oneida Monday, at X per quart. A farmer tried an experiment last year, says an exchange, to seo whether potatoes paid him best sald from the field st cur- rent prices, or stored till spring. He put away 100 bushels at M Pounds to the bushel In April he weighed them and found them sunk to %3 bushels, Aftor sorting there resonined 78. These at 6Ocents per bushel brought $080; and for the rame he could have in tne field ot the time of digri 7? In addgion the cartage would hava been saved, interest on muney, and valuable time in thp spring. Dandelions are unlusuaily numerous in meadows and pastures this seagon. Reports from varioustsections of north- ern New York show an increased acreage planted to fodder corn. This is an indica- tin of progress in the dairy industry. Experiments are bolus mado by horticalt- tur.sts to eliminate seeds from sme kinds of fruits by cultivation. The receipts of fancy creamery are not large, many of the finest marks showing more or less effects'of the late cstreme bent, and this trouble is expected to be more marked by nest week. Goods arrive ing on contract cannot be sold at a profit, and bulk going direct into store, - while the strictlyggommiwion fancy goads bave been cleaned up | preity crosely so that the supply of perfect | quality in suitable quantity for pefrigetators is not large, and with a few speculative buyers looking for ong lines at 180, | the matket holds fairly firmly on that basis tor the moment; in faot, some long lines have boen taken at 18';@I18%e, but speculative buying is not general and the local demind for current use is moderate and the market lacks any under current of strength _ Goods showing slight efects of heat have to - be shaded, and where such - défects are prominent values are uncertain. |_ Good firsts secure fair attention and steadily held at 16@17c, but lower grades slow ond irregular, Cheese. The receipts today came from western Now Y ork, Now Jersoy and Maryland. - Increased shipments of New York state berries are expected early next week, with lower prices and a: improvement in the quality of tho i t. B. J. Case, of the fruit firm of Case & Norris, of , Wayne county, was here yesterday making arrangements for shipments o fruit to is market during the semson. Ho says the damages to fruit from frost in western New York are notntarly so severs as have boon reported, and that there will be a plenty of fruit, especially rapes, which wore eupgaealho be in- jured more severely an any other fruit. Mr. Case states that improved shipping facilities have been secured by them for their fruit trade this season, and that arrivals will be much more prompt than last seasom, which means, of courso, fruit hore in better con- dition. New carrots aro in the market at 5¢ bunch. Potatoes sold here for 75 and 80 cents a yearsgo. Now 30c is about all that can bo secured. Watertown Produce Exchange. The cheese market today does not show the activity manifested last week; it is doubtful whether the prices received will reach last Saturday's figures. The bayers resort. considerable cheese as ar- riving at New York in a beated condi- tion during the past week. John C. McAdam shipped several hundred boxes of Oneida county cheese to New York ing refrigerator car by freight this week.
