After ■:tta;:w«tob*dsaiiiia' \'^half'taad:from-;l Tomorrow will be the analvorsary of one of tbe saddest events thst ever occur red in Watertown, and aa sad to contem plate today as it was one year ago to morrow. It was tbo oruel, needless sacrifice of as valuable a human life as drew breath in thla law-abiding, peaceful community, where we all feel so sooure in onr interests and our lives. A gonius tbat had struggled for years over stern obstacles and througb-a pathetic poverty, the story of which has never been told, until he had achieved a triumph ln science that will make bim long famous as a benefaotor to mankind, was extinguished by the too vioiously common and cowardly pistol. A gener ous heart, full of good impulses, sudden to anger but quick to forget it, glowing with love for the wife and child who were then made a widow and orphan, waa torn by a bullet. He had eomo here to assist in tba general prosperity of this ctty by establishing art important industry with all its advantages to our interde pendent interests and its honor to the name of Watertown. Ho bad gone through a long and bitter contention at law against thoss wbo sought to de prive Mm of advantages he had at last just gained snd honors he had won; and juat then at the scene of bis victory and hope be was laid in death. Very email ls the number snd very small the souls of those who will ever oeaae to admire his most prominent traits of character and honor hia memory. When the woret thing against him is said, In connection with hia taking off—that he felt a victim to a murderous assault on his own part— it should be remembered, in justice to him whose Ups wero bushed from telling his side ot the story, that tbst waa told by one whose life was at stake on his narration of it, and that it waa s story of a murderous assault made upon him witb a twelro-ounce walking atiok. No OM else in the world ever feared his life was in danger By one of Fred Barnet' sud den demonstrations of ill-tomper, so far aa otn be learned; and no one btlievoe that if the evil habit of carrying a pistol had sot existed in thst caio, any one’s life would havo been taken. Thla state needi such change as badly aa any. ______ PZaUUAE PEOPLE, With ths posstblS exception ot Oswego, there is more disreputable politics in Oneida county than In any other in (he state, outside New Tork city; snd even from the mttropolis there oomei no such charges of wholesale bribery si are made by tbs Oneida county people. It wu only* tew days ago that tbe action of the delegates from one town would de cide the complexion of thw delegatee to tho WMeeMlion bom tbe dlatrict. These delegatee were elected as Blaino men; by a large majority the caucus which selected them pronounced for Blaine. They were called representative men of their town. But they were ‘•*ceis br the stalwarts, and when tba time for action cam* they were fottnd working snd voting with ths stalwart crowd. It hM boen openly charged thst they sold themselves. Ths Blaino men have not been backward ia saying to openly; and (h* stalwarts do not tee lit to deny the tesirtion. If Blslno dolegateo were dis posed to sell themselves, they were not disposed to cry over it, Bat the Boonville convention disclosed a home of another color. Tho seventh ward of Utica is stalwart to the core; and none bat pronounced members of that faction were elected delegatee. Tet it appears that there was a Judos among them. He tamed ap mining in Boonville when ho was wanted. He had been given the power of substitutioa and tuid that power to betray tiie men wbo reposed confidence tn him. He sent in his place a man who never could have been elected in his ward, and this man was found voting snd acting with th* opponents of th» voters whom he wo* supposed to represent. This delegate ia accused of selling out. but as the price is not stated, the pubiio is left in ignorance ot how much it will ttke to boy an Oneida coun ty man. His vote would have been suffi cient to have elected Coggeihsll, but it was lacking, and the senator can not go to Chicago as adclrgato to work for the nomination of some new nun for the prcsidenoy. All this iu one county, mind you, snd a county at that which gave New Vork state one of the best governors it ever hid, famished the Untied States senato with twomembers. on* of whom was one of the ablest and purest men tbst over occupied a seat In ihe legislative bills of congress. Such corruption in a county which has famished the country with two able and honest men as presidential candid*tee! Such onminal proceedings in a county whioh hs« pawed aa the home of some of tho ablett men in ths country! It isre- tSTOitiug to think of. Oneida should hang her head for very shame. Tbo discipline enforced by Delong was not unduly severe. The captain was very kind to every one ou board, and particu larly considerate of people’s feelings. There was lees disagreement on hoard the Jeannette than on many of tho eloven sbipainwhich witness bau served In wit ness* opinion Delong treated Collins witb particular consideration. Ho had heard It said among the other officers on the ship that Mif a commissioned officer had done what Collins somotimes did, ho would have boen brought up for it; and, contin ued witness, “I was once brought up for it,” Tbo captain had a great deal of trouble in getting Collins to tako oxorcise.
