Indeed, while nearly the whoLe cabinet family o f the president wlioso name in popularly a synonym for peace and good will wore continually dealing ono anoth e r intimate blows under tho fifth rib—as when tJlay antagonized J. <^. Adama’ policy a t critical momenta—a most per fect specimen of a modem “ boom” was developed hy Llie uioliii but crafty Craw ford of Georgia, whose whole talent, hko that of so many of our contemporary atatearnen. ran to the organizing of his personal following und tho picking up of delegates. Again, the samo thing appears in tho passages inthe memoir ofThurlow Weed where i t is related how near Daniel Web ster came to the presidency on two occa sions. In the spring of 1839, Mr. Weed went to Washington a n d called Mr. Web- stor into tbo cloak room at the capitol. “I think 1 shall be the whig candidate,” Mr. Webster said. Mr. Weed expressed doubt. ••Who, thon, will bo?” asked tbo senator, “ It looks to me hko Harrison,” said Mr. Weed. Mr, Webator declared that Harri son stood no chance. “Tou aro misin formed.\ ho Baid. “The party wiil choosy a man with longer civic uppearance, who is butter adapted to the place.” “Tho Question is,” said Mr. Weed, “ who will poll tho most votes?' ••Well/* said Mr. Webster, “very well, b u t what do*>8 thia mean? You ar* going to choose a Hcott delegation in Now ’York.” Thnt. Mr Weed explained, was to keep New York away from Mr. Olay Then he went o n —“You do not boo me ben* to argue about that. What I come for and wbat 1 want is fur you lobe will ing lo accept the support of Now York for tho n e e presidency, in case my prediction about (jteuoral Harrison is verified/' Mr. Webster would not listou to this, and •‘Captain” Tyler was ultimately nomi nated. The memoir says that “ two years later, w hni General Harrison was dead and Mr. Tyl#*r president, Mr. Webster, as secretary uf stato under tbu lato vico pmjidont, had abundant leisure to reflect upon the conversation in tbo cloak room at iho capitol.” In 1S48, Mr. Webster was visited by Mr. Weed at Marehfleld and urged to ac cept the support of New York on a ticket headed by uenerul Taylor. “ Well,” said Mr. Webster, wben Mr. Weed sppearod at Marshfield, “ bow do things look now' I suppose tho question soil te, ‘wbo will poll loo most votes.' Yes,” said Mr. \Veed» “ and that man ti General Tavlor. who will bo next president.” \Why.” said Mr. Webster, “Tnyloris an Illiterate frontier colonel, who hasn't voted f<>r forty years!” Mr. Weed unfolded tho ab le rt of his visit. Insisting thnt (leneml Taylor muat bo nominated by tho whiga, or lio would bo taken un aod elected by tho domocrats. Mr. Wobetor sent fur George Aihsauo of Massachusetts, and Senator Wilson of New Hampshire, with whom pobhcal projpech wero thorough ly canvassed. They listened lo Mr. Weed 0 arguments snd wero disposed to yield to hii suggestion. Fi nally b is point was gained, and, plcaaed with h is success, ha waa about to take his departure, when Fletcher Webator reach ed tho Marshfield house. “Tho cause U making tremendous progress,” be said. Informed of Mr. Weed's mission, bo nd! cuied i t unsparingly. •'Enough,” aaid bin father. “I shall remain In too field os a candidate for president, 1 am not a can didate for any other place.' Tbo nattoool convention met in Juno. Gen. Taylor was nominated. Tbe vico presidency went begging, uoui finally a venturcsomo delegate nominated ilr. Hllnaorp, and ho became tbo candidate. Gen. Taylor was elected. Ho died on thoQthof July. 1&0. Mr. Fillmore became president, and Mr. Webster accepted the pmition of secretary of state in Mr. Fillmore o cabinet. Had Mr. Webster allowed tho use of his name for th© vice presidency in cither of tho abovo cases, ho would havo reached tho goal of bis ambition, tbe presidency. After occupying tho offico a part of a term i t would probably haro been very easy to make hlai h ts own successor. Mr. Weed s idea of tho Importance of the vice- prcsuiency. as twice exhibited in endeav oring to obtain Mr. Webster's consent to become a candidate for tho second place, has found abundant illustration m the hlntory of the Country. R a isin g P o tato e s . A correspond on t of tho Indiana Fortner has something to say concerning the rais ing of potatoes by tho straw process, which will prove interesting to our north ern New York farmers, lie writes From my experience in raising potatoes under straw I believe they could bo rats- ed in this way successfully, ond save the labor of cultivation. 1 had a smnll plot of ground broken and made mellow. Rich compost wns worked in the soil. The potatoes were planted hy first running a grail! furrow, and then dropping the *eed pieces in this furrow every eight inches, and covered by running another farrow, throwing tbe soil in the first, and then 6eod dropped la this, and so on until finished. Tbo ground was now covered w ith straw six o r eight inches deep. I waited until I thought they should bo coming up, and then 1 examined them. I found that the moles had rained my patch. Tb* compost tbat had been worked in the soil enticed earth worms, and tho moles, in hunting for tho worms, had eaten all the seed. At least none came up. Tho next spring I concluded to plant iD a different way. I had my ground broken up deep, working a rich and well rotted compost thoroughly in tho soil. The soil was now leveled and smoothed. The seed pieces were planted oa top of the soil in straight linea ten inches apart, and eight inches apart in the lines. Tho wholo was then covered with about six or eight iuohes of straw. 1 found tlio moles would raise tho soil some, but did not molest the potatoes any* 1 find that a liberal sprin kling of unlenched ashes about twice during Uie growing season is of great a d vantage. Many vines when stretched rap raoasured five feet, and tho tubers were the finest I ever raised. S tate News. William Leonard, aged 68, committed euicide in Buffalo by hanging. Henry J.
