L i f e is a burden to them and a ll abou t th e m , because the clim a te is „ u n c e r tain an d tlie elem ents are o u t of hum a n control. T h e y m a k e them selves the m o s t w retched o f m artyrs, too, if th e y are ih a country t h e y do n o t like, and th e y nev er d o like the country th e y a r e in . If dow n in a v a lle y , t h e y are suffocated ; i f in the p la in s o r on a table-land, they hate m o n o tony a n d long f o r undulations; i f they arc in a w o o d ed district, th e y dread the dam p, and w o r r y abou t th e Autumn ex halation s ; i f on a moor, w h o can live w ith o u t green' hills and sin g in g b i r d s ' Y o u nevor k n o w th e s e people t o do w i t h out a grievance. It may b e husband or b r o t h e r , friend or servant, as i t happens ; but thero is sure to b e some one whose ex istence puts them ou t o f tunc, and on whom , .therefore, t h e y revenge tlie discord b y eontinjial4 w o r r y in g . V e t they w o u ld he m iserable i f thoir grievance was w i t h draw n , leaving them for the tim e w ithout a victim . Indeed, the wom an w h o is m o re cheerful and hopeful than easily de pressed, nnd w h o d o e s not w o r r y any one, ia tlie e x c e p t i o n r a ther than the rule, and to 1 >o p rized as one w o u ld prize, any o t h e r rarity. Ohildren com e in for a good deal o f domestic w o r r y in g , and under pretenco o f go o d management and carefu l ed u c a tion are used aa mamma's s q u e a k ing heads, whieh lie e v e r h a n d y fo r a chaBe. Any one w h o has beon in a fam ily where the m o ther is o f n a t u r a lly w o r r y ing tem p er, and w h e r e , child, h a s a peculiarity, can a p p r o c ia t e t o tho full what tho propensity is. W ith su b s t a n t ial love at heart, the m o ther le«ds tho w retched little creature a lifo w o mo t h a n th a t of the typical d o g ; ind makes o f its peculiarity, w h a tever %hnt m a y b e , a porsonal offence, which s h , is justified i n cesonting and never leaving alone.
