He owned about 200 slaves, and bad all tbo worst habits of abe .old-limo - planter—drifikmg, gambling, horse-racing, Tocse p nr suit h alternated, forming his sole occupation, th > plantation being managed by ari overseer. He had the sole virtue of poesttsing a sot I ot Indian veneration ior tbo learednets ol his word, Be would pot execute a note ftr any purpose -whatever, and held a ll men in ^sovereign contempt who violated their \pledged word. He bttd no eumpunction in Silling a man in what ho deemed a just quarrel j bat his word was bis bond. This was his well known character, aud ho could have got credit for thousands on big word easier (ban other men could bave got hun dreds.' At tho time we speak-of ho bad killed several persons in gambling quarrels, and he was looked trpen as S loan uot to be crossed, except at the risk of life. One night, while playing oardsio Colum bus, a qiNrrel arose about tbe game. Bis opponent was a well known desperado, and he gave the lie to Wooley’s statement about the game. Bowies flashed out simultane ously—both were, slightly wounded;' when a lucky blow laid Wooley s opponenl.'doad upon the floor. Tbo next morning Wooley wu arrested—arrested because bo did not care that it should be otherwise. Wooley had carried his killing ao far tbat the yud^e felt bound tp commit him in ordor to avoid tne imputation of being affected either by fear of his desperado ism or wealth, .Accord ingly to jail went Wooley. Tbe jailor was a weak qmn—weak in courage and weak to resist tbo infiuenco of a doocer. After bear ing bis confinement for a day or two Wooi- ey sent fpr tbe jailor. '•Bee hero, Jim,” said he, “ yon know me; you know I never break my word. Now, I want to go out and have a social game witb tbe boys, - You can just leave me tbe key, and when its gets bedtime I will come hick lock myself in, and it will be sll right” This argument was enforced by material considerations; aod night alter nigbtWooley used to como out and enjoy his nocturnal liberty. Tbe court sitting soon, ba got the ease^put-ofF, and giving b iil in thr sum'or $10,000, waa. released. * At the next term of tbe Court, Wooley was put on trial: thq jury returned * ver dict oi guilty, aha the judge sentenced him to ono year in tha penitentiary at Jackson. The papers were duly made oat, and tbe Sheris' proposed to start with him for Jack: aon, but Wooley demurred. \Yen Anovr ahsriS,\ said ke(, “that the COUnty is poor - can’t afford the trip—and so FU just let my boy C sbsst drivomodown to Jackson, and save all the expense.
