Tbe wri ter teems to have been prompted to this in teresting work by certain errors tbat have crept into Fronde’s and Hsllam’s histories oi England. The writer makes the subject profoundly interesting, we should say, to all Protestant clergymen, and vastly nior.s so to educated laymen than the subject would incline one to believe. Tbe writer traces with a flowiDg pen and noble purpose, tbe 'relation, tlie popular perusal of the Scriptures, bears to'Englisb liberty, and all liberty derivable through the English lan- ; gusge. The story ot the English version is interwoven with the rise and progress oi civil and religious liberty, and witb the es tablishment ot tbe British civil constitu tion, -The earliest notice hitherto discov ered ol the translation ol any portion of the Sacred 8 criptures into Aoglo Saxon, says the writer, was in tbe seventh century, by a mopk .catted Cudiuou, the father-of English'poetry. He exorcised his poetical powers on the book ot Exodus, the Inciuna tion and Passion of our Lord. Thopa m. however, makes no pretensions to accuracy in translation. A year or two altenwr.l. Guxthlalto, an anchorite, wrote a version of lhe Psalms in Anglo Saxon. About il e year 708* Aldbelm, Bishop of Sherlum, translated the “ Psalter,\ partly into verse aod partly into prose. Tn 788, the vcneru blc Bede translated the Gospel of Hi. John, finishing tho last sentence only a -fbw min utes before bis death. Uo bad previously translated the Lord’s Prayer. No further traco oi translations of auy portion ol the Bible are found, till in the ninth century, when Alfred the Great, ono ot England's beat Kings, had the ton commandments, Witb the Mosaic injunction, and three chap ters of Exodus moat autted to his purpose, translated and placed at the head of hh code of laws. Hia biographer Bay , it was tho dcairo uf this gOort monarch, tbal “ all tlio free born youth ot his kingdom ahmiM be able t» road tho English Scriptures. - Towards tho end ut bis roigu he began tho translation of tbo Psalms, but did not live tn complete it. A celobrttod Anglo Saxon scholar [muici-i .Elfric, Archbishop 61 York, ie 1033 trans lated considerable portions of flio Ilihh-, and wrote an abridgment ul iho Old and 'New Tcatambnt. Considering (bat tho art of printing was not invented, these numer ous partial translations, and tbe numerous written copice msdo of them, shows, jor so dark an age, e turprissngly strong desire un tho part of the people to possess the Scrip tures In their Dative longue* Tho wriicr lays, tbat down 10 I860, ibe Psalter was ibo atily bork of Scriptures, entirely and literally translated into English. Luther had been there before blui, and bo was srio. His manuscript was put into tbo bands of a printer there, and so tbe first English edition of iho New Testament, complete, ever printed in the English language, waa done at Worms.— Three thousand copies wore printed and shipped to England ; but tbe news had gone before. Tho Romish hierarchy bad condemned the book, and evory copy that could be fouod was seized or purchased, and burned. But very few cipies of this edition escaped destruction. _ But tlie printing presses on tbo continent were get ting more common, and between 1535 and 1580, six editions of Tyndnle’s New Testa ment wore printed—probably not less than 18,000 copies m all. This translation, so far as it goes, is the basis of our present Bible, the King James version. Persecu tion was rife hnd unrelenting. In Novem ber, 1584, juBt after having completed a ro viaiun ot his translation of tho New Testa ment, be was basely betrayed by a man by the name of Phillips, who was sent to Ant werp, where Tyndale then was, by the King of England and bis Papishi Council, for that purpose. Tyndale was seized and dragged to the castlo oj Yilvoord, near Brussels, tv hero he remained a prisoner for two years. These years of imprisonment wi re employed in tbe work of translating and revising. Ho was exeouted as a heretic in October, 1,585. His last prayor was that tho Lard Jesus would open the eyes of the King of England. Many other translations foHowed tins, but the great care and re mitrkablo fidelity of Tyndale’a translation has secured lor tt tho position of (ho first standard translation in Protestant coun tries. It has given place in use to tho -nu thorized version of King James tho First, though Tyndalo’s transit tion served aa tho moat reliable version at tbe command <4 that learned council of travolators. Tho writer follows up hia subject, wiili much interest, to tho present lime, aqd dis cussoe tho subject of another “ revision,’’ aud recommends U.
