Teddy and Mabol sat on their little stouls before tho bright tire, o n e winter's twilight, feeling very sad. Usually tlie i f tongues kept up incessant chatter, and tbeir merry laughter could be heard all o v e r the house. Mr. and Mrs. .Graham , their Papa and Mamma, had gone away to s tay all n i g h t ; and only kind old Peggy was lelt to give them- th e ir supper and p u t thom to bed. It was always very dismal when Papa and Mamma -wore -away : thero w e r e then no stones, no games, no loving k isses tor good night B u t Bomolliing more than this clouded tho sunny faces that evening. l’0h, Teddy,” said Mabol, *'it ulmost breakB m y heart to th in k liiat Pop will never live hero again, lie u,ed to play su cunningly without things. “1 k n o w it,” said T e d d y ; “a n d though ho caught all the mice, b e hardly over k illed a bird. He h a d been the children's playmate for a year, and they were very f o n d of him. Mr. Graham had no idea th a t tb e y cared so much for him; so, when h is siiter told him she wanted a cat, he said she m ig h t have Pop. W h en he saw how sorry Toddy and Mabel wore, ho regretted his promise, hut thought he could make u p th e ir loss in some other way. On the afternoon of tbe day w e ire tel ling you about, poor Pop w a s tied up in a largo white meal bag and p u t Into the bot- to .n ot the sleigh which w a s to carry him t o his new homo. It was a bright winter’s afternoon a n d the sleighing wu f i n e T h e children stood a t the window watchiDg with tearful oyes tbe departure of their p et. W h en tho sleigh had passed out of sight, tbey returned to tbeir game ol L oto. Winter days are short, an d the second, gamo was scarcely finished before ic was too dark to seo the figures. So they went to tb e Arc, and. talked about P o p u n til Peggy called them tn tea. A c u n n ing little round table vrae sot for them , with Mabel’s new bluoand-white china ten s a t - a surprise which dear, thoughtful Mamma had ordorscL Mabel poured tea, o f course, while Teddy dispens ed, the wattle* ind marmalade w i t h great politness. Thoy vrcro very hungyry, and be-cimo so merry over their meal tfivt Pop tvas entirely forgqtten. Attor tea, they went back to t b e i r scats before tbe h r e ; b u t tho Btory-books were dull snd nothing seemed t o amuse them. A t lust Toddy s a i d : “M abel,I'll tell you wbatw o ’I ld o . L o t’aaak Peggjtf wornay mako somo candy ! That'll bo Inn “ So It w ill,'’ Bald MabeL ‘A n d it's a splendid night for coaling.” Tbey ran into th e kitcbon, where Peggy sat knitting a stocking. Sbo had cleared away all signs of woTk, and looked a s cos-y as posalbte. • Tho tea. kottlo was ilo^tng on one side of tbo stove, Icaviog just t b e right placo for a p o t of molssscs to boil on tbe other. Peggy, ploase,’’ said Teddy. \It would bo such fun /\ “Besides,\ added Mibol, “ we c a n 't do anything ofse, womiss Popso.” “ Woll, if I must, I must, I supDosa,\ said Peggy, rolling up h er yirn an d putting the ball on to the end ot the needles, a s sho w e Irom her chair. Sbo went to the pantry an d brought out the m o lasses-jog; th e n to a closet f o r the iron pot in which to boll the candy. She poured out the proper quantity ol molasses and set the p o t over the glowing coals. The children looked ou, following a l l hor movements w ith interest; b a t they know it always “bothered” Peggy to hive them talk when she was d i in g anything, s o they kept quiet os mice. WTten all w a s done, Mabel asked i f she m ight stir it. “Y c ’ll both have stirring enough to do to keep i t from burning ovor them coila,” said Peggy, as she handed a large iron spoon to Mable. \B a t candy’s always best w h e n it comes to a boil quick.” Mable stirred awsy s s well a s sho could ; but th o spoon wss large and clumsy lor ber small hands to manage. Presently Teddy satd: “L e t me Btir now, Mabel 1\ \Yes you m a y ; a n d I’ll g e t somo snow, and see if it is done.” So Mabel gave Teddy the spoon, and ran t o the door, whero she scooped up some snow in a saucer. “Bleaa me, children, it ain’t reedy y e t I\ eaid Peggy. Hoxvover, M s'rel b rought t h e snow, and Teddy poured a httlo oltbo boiling raolas sefe from tke spoon on to i t But Peggy was qplitd rig h t ; there was b o stiffening apparent Bo tho children resigned them selves to taking turns i a stirring, and ovory live minutes repeated tbe experim e n t ol trying whether i t was dono. At last to th e ir joy, tho molasses candied on t h e bdow . Poggy was c a lled to pro nounced upon i t ; and am ber judgm ent was lavoix-ble, the buttered pans w ere liUtA, *nd Teddy opened th e door while Peggy carried tbem o u t to coq L The full m o o n shone upon too snow makin£ i t u bright ms day o a t ot doers. When Peggy, cam e back from setting sway the candy, she was g reeted by a whisper trom the children, w h o pointed to the strange white object as they said : “ Peggy, what is it?” , Peggy, 'who h a d seen nothixig of i t , said : “W h a t’s w h a t?” “ T h a t thiDg there?” \ T l u t ! ” said P eggy. “Well I never ice tho liko u’ thatafote. W h itiver it i s ? ” S h e stood for a moment straining her eyes to see, then went a stop o r two near er, “ Well, I niver!” ahoexclaimed, suddenly, and stalked off down t b e patba. After she had taken a few steps, s h e tam e d and said: •“D o n 't y e e s ba atter eomiag out, for fear o' t b e cold. I’ll bring him in , the poor craythut.” \W h a t d o e s she mcan?” iaid Mabel, as sho c lung closor t o Teddy. \I don't know. But b a rk, Mabel I W asn’t that a mew ? It is ! It i s ! Oh Pop ! Pop! Ho b a a come home !’’ Off tbo children scampered, regardless of t h e cold n jght o r of Peggy's remonstran ces, a s tho mews w e rorepeitod, and thoy recognized tho meal-bag in -which poor Pop w a s still imprisoned. Ho h a d made bis escape from t h o sleigh so cleverly t h a t they did a c t miss him a n u l Aunt J a n e s homo w a s peached, Tbey loll very m u ch troubled, fearing tho poor fel low would die of cold and hunger. They had no idea t h a t ho could reach homo, meal- bagam l nil.
