/ ONEIDA TELEGRAPH, SATIJBI>%, FEBRUARY 14, 1852. For the Oneida Telegraph. Fable*—By Maop JJr. If •. 4. TH E AI 'B3 AND THEIR PRESIDENT . The Apes, having observed that the wisest among the nations of men chose a Presideut, determined to choose one also. And they said among themselves, \ We will choose an Ass for our President; for he, surely, will nev er abuse the authority which we confer upon him.\ Then one of their number answered, \ How shall we prcaervo ourselves from the scorn of the world, if we elevate stupidity to the highest place in the nation i \ And tho wise ones replied—\ We will clothe the ass of our choice in a Lion-skin, nud all the world will reverence him as a Lion while we know him to be but an Ass.\ So au Ass was cho- feen. The laughing nations, however, under stood the stratagem ; for they saw the four hoofs, the thistle-mumbling snout, and the shape of tho half-concealed ears under the skin of the Lion. But they only laughed in their sleeves, and quietly awaited the result Now, when the Ass-President saw himself the laughing stock of all the world, he prayed to the ghost of his Uncle. Kor he had, made the apotliQOsis of a dead Ass his god, and worshipped it. And thus he prayed: \ O ghost of my Uncle, hear ine! Thou seest how-* juy enemies and thine are striving to bring our common name iDto derision. De scend, therefore, and confound them, O ghost of my Uncle! And since they, in mockery, have clothed me in the nkm of a Lion, do thou, to their utter confusion, grant me, not the skin of a lion merely, but the spirit, the flesh also, and the bony part, and thine shall be the glo ry !\ A hollow, sepulchral bray made answer : \Thou art heard! Be it as thou wilt!\ The next morning the A]xw were awakened by a hideous sound, compounded of a bra\ and a roar. All, ru-diing forth from their eo\- 1 erts, beheld with dism.iy the trau-.formatioii which had been wrought in their Lion-Ass- President. The hoofs were changed into cl&^rs, terrible, long and bare. The tln.->tl«- inumbling snout was contracted into a hideous face, whose demoniac grin displayed a row of horrible fangs. All that remained of the Ass was the monstrous ears, and they were half- covered by a terrific mane. As the apes gazed in terror at the spectacle, the shape Injure them began to expand, a .i if by some dmboli cnl enchantment. It grew and grew, till its gigantic proportions shut out the light of the sun, and casta cold .uid frightful shadow upon the poor creatures trembling before it. At the first motion of the monster, they turned to flee; but, with a roar winch .shook all the Eastern Hemisphere, he suddenly leaped upon them, and swallowed down tin' whole nation at a gulp* The aualogue and parable of tln .s fable mnj be found in the historj of a certain modern Republic.
