M TH E PR ID E OF NEW YORK. ISB R ’S S J E ^ E C iA L lT Y . ^iuiroMmojiofAj£5EioAKGEimrs. “..Garrect ^ith spirit, eloquent with ease, Intent to reason, or polite to please.” m it. l O E E H m t T POR THE NEW YEAR. R is with no feat of the War’s effect upon thisir liieratx fortunes, that the publishers of Neto York Mercury acknowledge the uuwaTeripg loyalty of their 200,000 subscri bers, and hnnoanOe to them, and to ail, that Ike New York Mercurfi for this year (1863) will be richer in every luxury of Polite Lit- eiuture than ever before. It is no upstart speculation, no temporaiy “ sensation,” but s first-class literary Weekly, which has been familiar to the United States for a quarter of a century; and while the wishy-washy zaushroom prints of yesterday are cutting down their talent even while they raise their subscription price, The New York Mercury maintains all its great staff of Romancers, Poets, Humorists, Essayistu, Story-Tellers, and Editors, and promises to inake it still greater for 1363. It is the one paper for ^very home. Its forty columns of reading matter per week constitute an unparallel^ conservatory of the ^tertaining, and its Novels, Miscelfaneous 'EWes, Beauties of Verse, Gossip, Feuilletons, Broadsides of Humor, and Polished Edito rials, combine to epitomize all the charms of W it abd Sentiment! The husband reads it to his wife, the mother to her children, the Ibvejto his sweethart, the soldier to his com rades, and the village school-master to the circle around the stove. It is familiar to ev ery man, woman and child in onr country, and has regular subscribers in several coun- tnes o f Europe. The New York Mercury is also idedtified with the grandest patriotism of the' age, for several members of its brilliant Staff hold high rank in our noble army, and have made themselves as famous with the sword as With the pen. The great illustra ting artist of the New York Mercury, the in imitable Darlw, gives the paper the highest attributes of Fine A r t ; and yet this largest literary weekly of the day promises to sur pass itself in all these respects daring the New Teat. The first New York Mercury Novelette for the new year, to be commenced in the issue of January 3,1863, is called VICTOKIA; OB, THE HEIRESS OP CASTLE CLIPPE. B y Cousin May Carleion, aUTHOB OP * GIPSY GOWER,' ‘ SYBIL CAUPBELL,’ ‘ e r m i n e ,’ ‘ LA MASQUE,’ AC., AC. The productions of this distinguished au thoress heed no eulogy. Public opinion has long since pronounced them superior to any other novelettes published on this side of the Atlantic ; and the true test of their merit is found in the fact that they are eagerly repro duced after their publication in the Mercury, by the English press. W e may add that the hew tale, “ Victoria,” is fully equal in interest and depth of plot to either of those which have secured so large a share of public ap proval, and we can earnestly recommend it to all story-readers. The New York Mercury is sold by all newsmen and periodical dealers in America. 'To subscribers, it is regularly mailed every Saturday morning, for S2 a year; three copies for $5 ; six copies for §9 ; eight copies for 39; eight copies for 312, with an extra copy, free to the getter up of the club.
