Mr. Chaplin, it appears, engaged in the Slave stealing business at Washington against the adviee of Mr. Smith, who nevertheless bleeds freely to keep Mr. Chaplin out of Court. Mr. Smith errs, we think, in paying Jus money for objects unworthy, in every sense, of a great and good cause. If Mr. Chaplin thought proper to engage in the business of stealing Slaves, he ought to have been left to take the consequences. Beside the dishonesty and meanness of the occupation, it ia to the conduct of such men that the evils of Slave ry are aggravated and prolonged. There are, practically, no worse enemies of the Slave than those who avail themselves of opportunies^' to induce Domestics to run away. The cause -of Emancipation cahnoCbe promoted by such •means. The effect of such movements 1 B to •exasperate Slaveholders, and to subject Slaves to more rigorous treatment. But for this spe cies of depredation—indeed but for the very act of Mr. Chaplin, the present Fugitive Slave Law could not have been forced through Con gress.—[Eve. Jour. |^A HAPPY RETORT.—An instance of Irith readiness at repartee occurred the other day At the Capitol, which is too good to be lost Certain members of Congress, finding the debates rather dry in the House, stepped out to refresh their thirsty spirits at Casarish's re fectory, which is conveniently contiguous.— As they passed out, they saw some eight or nine laborers, harnessed to a sled, hauling a stone about heavy <«nough for one horse, while one, acting as a drivpr, leisurely walked along bid \ (All the laborers are on a per diem allow ance, as well as the members.) Pausing to witness this operation—which seemed to present a parallel to their own ar duous labors irr the public service—one of the members addressing \ the driver,\ said— \ Well, friends, you are making yourselves HOUSES, I see \ YPB/' WAS thft prompt rejoinder. \ and by questionably rather a filthy one; antf the spec facie of great brown bomy feet, not a whit too clean, splashing «nd spra <Vlirig in the babbling juice, conveys' at first; sight a qnalmy species' of feeling which, however, seems only to-be entertained by those to whom the sight is new. I looked- dreadfully'' -askance at the operation when I first came across it; and when I was invited—by a lady, too—to,taste the juice, of whiefrsh'e caagl t ap a glassful; a certain -feel ing of the inward man warred terribly against politeness. Bnt nobody around seemed to be in the least squeamish. Often and ofler did I see one of the heroes of the tub walk quietly over a dung hill, and then jump—barefooted of course, as he was—into the juice; and even a vigilaint proprietor, who was particularly care ful that no bad grapes •wen tin to the tab, made no objection. When I asked why a press -waa not used, aa more handy, cleaner, and more convenient, I was afterwhere assured that all efforts had failed to construct a wine press ca pable of performing the work with the perfec tion attained by the action of the human foot No mechanical squeezing, I was informed, would so nicely express that peculiar propor tion \of the whole moisture of the grape which forms the highest flavored wine. The manner in which the fruit was tossed about was point ed out to me, and I was asked to observe that the grapes were, as it were, squeezed in every possible fashion and from every pos sible side, worked and churnel and mashed hither and thither by ever-moving toes and muscles of the foot As far aa any impurity went the argument was, that the fermentation -flnnrfr-ja imm fr» thn mrfnee, every atom of and Pamphlets can be hajh or-aent Oil87'i , all<> w Grease, and OHIO •' MINERAL. Invariably have I found them I possessed of a happy disposion, very industri ous and persevering, patient in endurance of hardship, faithful in their obligations, and wonderful in imitation.
