The Superintendent* would further report, that the avetageowt per week fur siipporting-tt e pauper* at the pni>r -ln)ti «e, during the past year, including the keeper's salary, and the salary of the attending physician to the poor-house, is. about 46J cents. During the past year, provi. aiona have been higher than for several years past; and cspecv»'Iy the failure of the potaloe crop has mide an essential difference in the ex- f pense. All the labor on the poor-house farm has been performed hy the keeper and the paupers, during the past year. l'ursuaiil to n resolution of the Board of Su* j pervisors, dated November 23,1844, the superin tendents would further report, that the number of persons.who have received temporary relief in the several towim of this county during the year last past, U as follows: In the town of George town 7; in Lebanon,. 12; in Nelson, 13; in Le.upx, 51; in Madison, 12 ; in Hamilton, 32; in BronKfield, S; in Cn?.enovia, 16; in De Ru.v- ter, 7; in Fenner, 2; in Siockbridge, 9 ; in Smil'h- Geld, 12; in Sullivan 51; in Eaton, 66: And that the sum expended in each of the said towns for an id temporary relief is as follows: Brookfleld, 8165 75-; Smithfield, $215 69; De Ruvter, 388 69; Fenner, 854 26; Siockbridge, gl37 B9; Cazejiovin, gl09 77; Sullivan, 8471 33; Eaion, #481 01; Georgetown, g34 95; Lebanon, $51 97; Nelson, gSOD 11; Madison, §336 59; Lenox, §590 05;1nnd Hamilton, $233 95. The number of paupers transported from the several towns in this county to the poor-hou«e, <ltiring the past year, wa. c , from BrookfieJd, 2; Smithfield, 7; De Ruyter, 1; Fenner. 3; Stock- bridge, 2; Ca::enovia, 7; Sullivan, 17 ; Eaton, 32; Georgetown, I; Lebanon, none; Nelson, 14; Madison, 16; Lenox, 8; and Hamilton, 20. In addition, we would further state, that the num ber of persons that receive temporary relief in the different towns, and the'expense of said relief, varies essentially from year to year. We would further report, that we have been frequently solicited by the inmates of the poor- house that the^might .be furnished with some weekly newspapers tor their amusement and in formation; and wc think their request ought to be grunted. We would further stale to your honorable board, that the poor-house establishment .is al most entirely destitute of any reading books— there being only-one tchole Bible belonging to the fBtatiln>linicnt, anil but three OT - four parts of Bibles, as wc can learn. Common humanity re quires that the unfortunate poor of our county should not only nor he deprived of these blessing*, but that they should be furnished with useful books, that they may read,,and thus pass their many unpleasant hours more pleasantly, and, we would hope, more beneficially. We would also call theaneritinirofymlrboaffr to the situation of the poor, unfortunate insane persons confined in lonely cells in the poor-house to the great inconvenience of many of the inmates whose rooms are directly over\ the cells, and ore thereby exposed to the unpleasant noise as well as scent oT the poor unfortunate ob jects of humanity. t _ The superintendents would further rcpnrl, that according to the best information we have, we suppose the poor-ftinj of .this aounty 13 about gl ,800 in debt, so tbot the keeper of the pnor- house has no funds in his hands t o make the ne cessary winter purebaspR with ; besides, he has already advanced over glOOof his own money to make purchases with. Owing Jo The advance in the price ofthe necessaries of life, it is our opin ion that the expense'of supporting^ the poor of this county for the ensuing year, will be as much as it has Decn for the past year.
