•ITEMS KOJi THE SEASON, GKASS SEED —One of the most successful and economical modes of securing timothy seed, and which ii practised by some farmers to great advantage, is to veup the tops of the grass while it is yet standing in the meadow, to be afterwards \hrashed and cleaned, and 'lien the real of the grass is mowed and .manu factured into liny. The seed thus costs only the labor of cutting and thrashing, the remain der affording the usual crop of hay. MIXING IUM/RE with the foil is of the great est consequence; and i( is especially so wheu applied in the latter part of summer for the VliBtit mlhiot -ueor-nn-auund- anVsopply of unmlxetT manure, burlediirlargyi masses and lumps beneath the soil. When' manure, therefore, is spread, it should be harrowed at (east half a dozen times well, with the surface soil, before the plow turns it under, ft (fms becomes thoroughly broken, the soil is m.ide mellow, and the whole is well inter mixed. So important, is this, operation, that •tfnr-half or even one -thTrd the manure will sometimes be' .equally efikacious where this practice is adopted. \\ TBJ5I>!TN5 \ YOTNO~TKEBS.—It often \be\\ comes necessary at midsummer, to trim the side branches of young trees, for the purpose of throwing the strength of the growth into an To Blacksmiths. A gentleman is a man who respects the lights and feelings of others, n< die best meaus of pTontoiing their happiness. According toj this definition, a gentleman will not swear; for he will not deliberately check the venera lion of others by irreverent appeals, and much (ess will invoke more than human power to aid in inflicting pain. And among whom do we find this most prevalent ? Among those most uddicted to other vices, and especially intem perance. Drunkards generally swear, because intemperance, impairs self-refpect for others. To swear like a pirate, is a proverb Why ? Because profanity is the usu.il vice of the vi olent; and as piracy is the groatest crime of violence, it is naturally accompanied by the last degree of profanity. \ I C.<NNOT STAND THAT.\—And what could not the sailor'stand ?'' When tho fever left me, being rather of a consumptive habit, I had a very sovere cough and raised considerable blood and oilier matter which was troublesome nnd considered dangerous, as it prevented me from sleeping or getting rest in any way. Al this time I was ad vised to try Downs' Vegetable Balsamic Elixir, which I did, anil-in a few day* my lungs appeared to be healed and free from soreness. My cough left me and I had nuito recovered. From that tirao to the present I have enjoyed comparatively good health, and take pleasure in certifying to the beneficial effects ol tho Elixir in this case, believ ing, as do also my family and friends, that it saved my life. 1 can most cheerfully recommend it to the public as\ a safe mill\ efficacious remedy for coughs, colds, and diseases of lhalungs generally.
