J , came to Waterford to ac company a new steam fire engine, made for that city by L. B utton of that village) to its destination. When here ti^ey em braced the opportunity to visit fire attrac tions of the place and vicinity, and when they returned, a very pleasantly written report of their journey was published, from which we copy that part referring to Wa terford, and Lansingburgh : as published in the S&ntinel. “Waterford is a very quiet and orderly town of about 3000 inliabitants, It has a Mayor but no police officers—the business being performed by constables. It has two hotels, two or three saloons, three ma chine shops, and three flour mills. At one time it was quite a business place, but the Railroads and Champlain cimal carry the business to Troy and Albany. The Ma chine shop of Dir. Button is the princ pal one, and is quite extensive. The proprie tor has a wide reputation as builder of hand engines. The old “Union” and tlu •‘Delavvare”are both Mr. Buttons n..anufac- ture and are ly oddstlie most powerful hand engines now made. We spent a veiy agreeable time in Wa terford. And visited the adjoining village. Lansingburgh, where we saw a stoauier of the same pattern as the “ Union” which is said to have paid for itself in two weeks af ter its purchase by saving thousands of dol lars wortn of property.’’ Prior to the 1st o f September very many of our store keepers purchased large supplies of matches, in order to save the stamp tax, and they are now selling them without stamps. Their sale is illegal. Ev ery bunch of mate es, no iivdter when m.ide, muit be stamped, and any person who has them on hand, and neglects to . affix the req>,ired stamps, is liable to arrest and to lose them by conf scatio i.
