And we think there is no way of pleasing the fancy of the youthful heart (as well as older ones) as by assembling together in a hot mid summn- day, in some cool grovei and passing a few hours in innocent amuse ments, and partaking of a bountiful supply of refreshments ever found in abundance on such occasion. These, to the young heart are worth a whole year's toils and troubles—one day of festivity and mirtli, with ;them, overbalances the evils of many days of their little troubles and perplexities. Nor is this charming influence operative alone upon the child, but in a multitude of instances in every such assemblage, whether-it be a pic nic, or excursion upon the river or rail car, we see the older ones enjoying the occasion equal ly with the juveniles This is rigid. It has a lasting induenoe of a goodly chariioter the youthful ones who a r » also partakers in sports and festivities of the day. It is con ductive to health, it has a good moral tendency, and should ever be encouraged. We have noticed in our columns several pic nics wliioh have already come ■'off, and more are yet to come. Among the latter we would mention tliat of St. John’s ChurcR which takes place this afternoon at Lansing’s Qrov», for the Benefit of the new ehuroh. Thii will doubt be well attended as ample arrangements have been mside to carry out the programme oh a grand scale. We also hear that tho Sunday School of the Methodist Episcopal Church is to have a pic nic one week from to-day. This will also he 'conducted on a grand scale and hundreds of little hearts will bo made glad on that occasion. The Brusli Makers are also to have a pio-nic the latter part of the present month. As this is a numerous class in our -village, it will u n doubtedly be the most largely attended, and most “ gay and festive” one of the season. ■Lansing’s Srove is becoming a very popular J ^ A ibant I ibms —P alsb Rispoii't,—The report cironlated that Mr. Larose’s steamer, Lizzy fBaker, now employed by tlla Govern ment on James River, also that Thomas Law- lor, o f the firm of Br.ainard Lawlof^ boat- builders, of this city, were captured, and taken, to Rebeldoin, turns out to 110111111110. We see stated in Washing ton that Commisioner Newton has received re cent advices from the West, representing tho wheat crop to b e better than was anticipated, regards exoelleiico of grain and quality of straw. The yieldwill not probably be an aver age one, but the falling off in the quantity will, *t is thought, b e fully compensated by the im proved quality of the grain. lI^N e w Steam Fire Engine. This we tliink is a good moral as it gives to employees an hour or Wo ■of leisure time which they much need to at tend to their own daily liecosailies, and when the tiling hecomes generally known, our diti- zens eon manage to do their shoping before that hour, as well as after, and they have the satisfaction of knowing that they are bestow ing a great favor Upon the hard working desks.
