IIISGELLANY. An Artist’s Opinion of Foston. Mr. Jarves, in a late work entitled “Art Idea]” among kher good things, thus dis courses :—“ The sorbiquet ‘hub of tlie uni verse,' given in ridicule has a spice of truth at bottotti; Bostoii is d eity dfexiremes. It grows the intensest snobs,’ the meanest cow ardice, and thickeift-skinned hypocrites, by the side of saintly virtues, intellectual vig or, general inteligence and a devotion to the highestjnterests e f humanity, unsur passed by any city in the world. Ils falfi- onable manners seem impoi ted from Nova Zambia. Nowhere else does one friend give another only two fingers to shake without intending an insult. But the sam'e mau is prompt with his bank-chech for the public welfare. If a stranger judge Boston only by its snobs, Pharisees, and frozen- zone atmosphere of personal scrutiny reception, he will coincide in the worst opinions of her enemies. But it takeif a rich soil to grow strong weeds. Far out weighing its shortcomings, he wUI find, on looking farther, self-sacrificing hearts, quick to respond to noble instincte^; souls ripe in devotion, to generous ideas; a prac tical clear-headedness, a not-to-be-bribed- or-turned-aside love of justice; an earnest willingness of labor; and, above all, a freedom, which admits of intellectual growth in , all directions, despite time-honored prejudices, the seductions of fashion and' luxury, or the gibberish, of cant. With such rich salt o f hmnanity vivifying her his tory, Boston need envy no other city its op portunity for neatness.’’ of the world, askSd that a (j, ^ , from every station by which the friiin b passed should be sent to him. Examihihi these one after anolher, he a t lagt bam^ a sand which was identical with that fouhJ in the gold boxes. The name of the sta tion whence this sand had been collected was known; inquiries were set on foot a l that station, and among the persons ,ui()^ einjpiiq jie'd, the thief Was detected. Not long ago there occurred in Prussih one of those cases of detection of crime by scientific means which interest a large and intelligent class of readers, A quantity of gold, packed in boxes, was despatched by a railway tram. On arrival at its destina tion, it was discovered that the gold had been stolen from some of the boxes, which, were refilled with sand, to make up for tl eficient weight.
