Do you un derstand that ? —The ;West-End of London is now so full that it is difilcult to obtain a house la any first-rate locality. The same difficulty is experienced in New York city, only it is not confined to any particular local^. —Mr.Day advertises the loss of his dog; Mr. Brown hopes he will succeed io finding him; for if “every dog has his day,”he dosen’t see why every Day should Wot have his dog. MISCELLANY. —A friend of ours says that he hah been without money so long that his bead aclws “fit to split’* when he tries to recollect bow a ailvtir dollar look*. He cays that the notion that “ we live in a world of change'* is a great fall, T hey S ever M ention P ay .— Accord-' ing to the Charleston Courier, a very inno cent and unsuspecting Union prisoner has expre.-sed his astonishment that while our troops are ever clamoring for their pay as soon os it is due, the Confederate soldiers seem to be perfectly indifferent on the sub ject, and “never,mention their pay as a mat ter of importance.\ This is more suppnsing when the fact is well known that eleven dollars in graybacks are worth nearly-fifty cents in gold, or were, a little while ago, and would, consequently, pay for an indif ferent dinner at a country house, or “ordi nary,” as they sayln Virginia. Y. ’ All orders promptly attended to, —A family in South Deerfield, left some indian meal in the bottom of an iron pan in which they had baked johnny cake the night previous, in the buttery, one of the recent cold nights, which the rats attempt ed to eat, hut the frost on the iron froze their tongues to the pan so that they could not release them, and they were caught the next morning. —A California paper relates the story ol a woman whose husband was killed after she had been married four weeks; in thrte more she married again; that husband liv ed two weeks; in two weeks after he died ghe married his brother, and six months af ter her last marriage she gave birth to a child by her fire>t,husband. A B rave R egim e n t .— The Ninth New YorJf State Militia fought gloriously in the late battles in Virginia and suilered more, probablyi than any other regiment in the field. It numbered 600 men before the fight and after the action, four officers and fifteen men were ali that was left cf —Extravagance is the rule in California. The San Francisco Bulletin says that “there ore men who were poor, and not ashamed ofit, within five years, in San Francisco, who now tell without a bluf that they cannot liveoU @10,000 a year.’ — ^A citizen of Biddleford, Maine, who, a little more than a year ego, worked as a machinist in a Laconia repair shop for one dollar and a half per day, now pays a tax on a net income of @27,000—made Intlrt manufacture o f cotton machinery.
