HARVEY Si CO., Apctlteomy Hall, No. 384 Kiver St., Troy,N.Y; One Way to Kiillify a Bad Lease. f There is a shrewd and wealthy old landlord away down in Maine, who is noted for driving his sharp hitrgaifis,” hy which he has amassed a large amount of property. H e is the owner of a large iber of dwelling-houses, and it is said of him that he is hot over scrupulotis of his rental charges, whenever he can find a customer whom he knows to be 1 re sponsible. His object is to lease liis house for a term of years to the best ten* ants, and get the uttermost farthing in le shape of rent. A diminutive Frenchman called on him last winter, to hire a dwelling he owned in Portland, and which had long remained empty. References were giv en, and the landlord, ascertaining tha the tenant was a man ‘-after his own heart,” immediately commenced to “jew” him. lie found that the tenement ap peared to suit the Frenchman, and he placed an exorbitant price upon i t ; the leases vcrc drawn and duly and the tenant removed into his days, accompanied with a note as fbli “M o N sieur — I have b in smoke— have been drouned— I have\'heen freeii to death in ze house v a t I a v hire of yovt for ze perutd as 1 m a y des’i'c. This will be a productive source of revenue without doubt, and will be paid in sums so small that the' burden will hardly be felt. To give our readers an idea of the magnitude of the business of match-making, we wilJ give a few statistics of one o f the manu..' facturers of this iudispensible article; Mr. Carleton, of Boston, has three fac. tories, in which he consumea twenty cords of wood and five hundred potmdaf of brimstone per day. H e employSj,ti$o' hundred girls and a number of flien, (girls catmot make matches without! fhe co-operation of men), and on his busin ess alone the Government will receive a revenue of $1,440 per day. A t present latches at one-third'of he_ is selling his matches at one-tl a cent per box or bunch, .so that the tax will amount to three hundred per cent? more than the cost of the article tp re-r tailers.
