The whole force will soon be in motion, but the heavy rain of the last thir ty-six hours renders the roads yery difiS- cidt for wagons and aitillery. The proper’ tion of severely wounded is greater than in either of the previous dayis fighting. This was owing to the great use made of artillery. Gur cavalry under Gen. A WoNDEEFUL STOEY BUT MosT POSI TIVELY T eue . —A citizen of this place^ walking in the woods, found a nest of young mocking birds. He placed the nest in the cage, which he hung upon the same tree, thinking that the mother could take better care than he of her brood. 'Visiting his cage w swollen young family upon ' the following Sunday, he found to his surprise that the birds had all disappeared, and in the bottom of the was coiled up a large black snake, so len that he could not get out of the hole through which he had entered, In dignant at the audacity of the fellow, and burning with revenge, he carried his snake, ship to a burning limekiln and placed him upon a heated rock, when to his surprise the snake burst upon, and the five young birds flew out, but wereBo scorched by the fire that he could not save themi The name of the gentleman is Mr. Charles bread and butter at half-past eight o’clock fini.shed up the day* The beds were simply camp cots, some with and others' without mattrasses; and all the toilet apparatus anywhere visible were tin washbasins, a moderate supply of towels, g b it of looking glass, and a li comb, distilled liquor or wine is ; mitted. iThe inventory of the Genei baggage when he made his brilliant cam paign in the rear of Vicksburg, it may- well be remembered, was a briar-wood telescope and tooth-brash. Silks, satins, laces and rich goodsofsucha description as to be termed mereluxuries, are more generally used now- than at any previous date in our history, as may be wituessed at the Opera, the thea tres, the Park and in the streets, where we find the ladies trai ing through the dust and mud with the richest and mo^t expensive dresses. A spirit of unbounded extrav- gance is certainly displayed, which giyes rise to the largely increased importations we notice. The result of it all will doubt less he apparent by and by. On the removal of the re mains of an old building within the fort, for the purpose of erecting a hay press, there was discovered a large number of gold coins of ancient date, all of the denomination of five dollars. Six of them were picked up at first by a little boy, supposing them to be pennies.
