All the charts -which have recently- been published showing the fluctationsin the price of gold are, worthless. There has been no fluctu.ation in the price of that inetol, but there Las been .a great v.a- riiition in the value of the paper money litiatecl by the government and the banks. The prodnctioii of gold and its non-use as currency in the United States for tho last two yeai;.s may have cheapened'it ;t trifle in the markets of the world, btit iictual variations in the absolute value of gold for the Inst ten years are among the fractions of one per cent. These charts, therefore, which represent gold ns wav ing up and down a line between one and seventy, are -worthless. 'While the appears to go around the earth, it is real ly the earth whicli is [going round the sun. Our present system of quotation is monstrously deceptive. In California they do much bettor, as tjfere the paper is as it should bo,.quoted at a discount. If this was done, it would be much more honest, and w'ould cure people of many delu.sions. Men who now think they are worth one hundred thousand do’lfars would be constantly reminded (if the Ap parent premium on gold remained at seventy) that they were really in posses ion of only fifty-nine thousand dollars of real money, while employees in receipt of one thousand greenback dollars per' annum would know their actual income was only five hundred and ninety dollars. 'Whert the day of reckoning comOs, s(nd' come it must, the „whole country would be saved bitter disappointment if people realized, day by day, that instead of getting richer they wefe really getting poorer. One of the delusions of the hour, for instance, is that our national securities are from eleven to thirteen per cent, above par, when really they are somewhere in the sixties, with gold at its present apparent premi um. It is a mortifying fact, but it is a fact, that the yet-to-be-crowned Emperoi of Mexico—^this puppet potentate forced upon an unwilling people by foreign bay- oents—has just negotiated a loan with the bankers of Londbn and Paris on bet* ter terms than the great republic of the United S tates could get. The new Mex ican loan was taken at thirty three; Mr. Chase would do well if he could get six^r ty. But we suppose it Is useless to try to' induce the country to retrace its steps lYe are given ov.er “ to delusions, to be lieve a lie,” for the present, and will not realize the truth until pay-day comes, « and the ghastly face of our real poverty becomes so apparent that the wayfaring man, though a fobl, cannot be mistaken, A PiiiGHTENED N egro , —During the a4-' vance of our forces towards Bridgeport, ■ heavy artillery skirmish was had, and ne gro Jim was not seen for a whole day. Atf night when hs came up we asked hint where he had been. He rolled his larged eyes in his head, and said: Oh! massa, I heard something coming through the air, saying, ‘ Where’s dat nig. ger, where's dat nigger, where's dat niggerf and putty soon dat ting busted, and little' debela went skirmishin’ all round arter dis nigger, and I run away!” Those persons who have heard shells’ ime whizzing through the air, will readily' see that Jim's description of them is per. ■The Scientific American stnteb that- in England the coffins from oyer-crowded' burial grounds are dug up dried and gi'ound, and used as an ingredient in the adultei'iition of coffee. A beverage made of such matei'inl would stand a chance 4ci have a good deal of body to it. —A'V eritable A ntique ,—The oldeai newspaper in the world is publi.'hed in Pe kin, It Is printed on a large sheet of silk.- and, it is said, has made a weekly appear^*' ance for upwards of a thousand years.
