I know a little village, Where a sunny sparkling stream nrmurs o’er the shining pebbles Like the music of a dream; And I love to see it glisten 111 the sun’s bright golden ray— But neither stream nor sunlight Has brodglit me here to-day. And I know a little cottage Where the summer roses grow, And star-like scented jessamine, With petals white as snow; Where feathered songsters chant at eve, A soft, melodious layr— But neither birds nor flowers, I ween, Have brought me here to day. But in that cottage dwelletlx now A maiden fair and bright', With eyes like dew genimed violets. And looks of sunny light; W ith soul as pure as yon bright stream, . And heart as light and gay— To claim that maiden for my bride I came this road to-day. p i s t f l l a n j . Dwellings and Rents* Owing to the exp ensiveness of build ing materials and the high price of labor, it is safe to assume that there will be few new dwellings erected during the coining year. The direct effect of this state of things is, 'to enhance \’the value of rents houses already erected. A certain imberof dwoliiigs there always must be, hut it cannot he doubted, that at the present time, the supply is wholly inadequate to the demand. In rapidly growing cities and villages this is more app.arent than in those staid & quiet ones, where population is at a stand-still. But even here the want of sufficient dwellings severely felt. The Home Journal truly says: “ There is nothing clearer than it is the duty of every family, and especially of every American family, that can possi bly afford it, to have a home of its own, and to use it, not simply for the comfort of its own members, b ut as a means of giving pleasure to friends and relatives, and as a means of setting an example, to the whole community, of the domestic virtues and graces. Better a thousand times the humblest and most obscure “cettage of your own,” which may have an ingle-iside and an al ter for you and yours, all a-cheery with domestic joys, than a luxuriously invit ing and palatial suite o f rooms in one o f our boarding houses or hotels, without the benign sensation of a home. Strange to say, men are not few, who, in stupid imitation of some of their richer and more indolent brethren, are decoyed in to the folly supposing that a boarding is a niche higher in the scale of social con sideration than building a iite on one’s own hearth. It is, therefore, that we “respectfully submit,” that what our village impera tively requires at this exigency, above all other things, is the increase of dwel lings—small, y et elegant, tantamount to the steady increase of its inhabitants. In execution of this proposition, there seeins but one very grave objectioh-^the pres- advanced prices of all building commodities; and still, though this be a consideration of no meah importance, they could, and should, he erected' a t a cost' which, for the comfort and well-be ing- of households, might betteh be sus tained than the demoralization, .conse quent upon long living in those recepti- cles of all follies and crimes. W e have long ignored and lament the manners and associations of fashionable or un fashionable hotels; and, being assured from experience in both Hotel and Home unhesitatingly pronounce the one the fairest representation of all the human weaknesses and-discomforts, and the oth er the best prototype of an Eden of love- and felicity! One’s grate emits a cheerier warmth; one’s [.board ensures a greater appetising, one’s spirit is tem pered better, and made the purer,- stron-, ger, when possessed within the walls of Home, though they be never so low and narrow and ancient! Hotel “ for all other things,” hut Home i'S for the soul!” — A grand jury in rcbeldom ignored & bill against a huge negro for stealing chickens, and before discharging him frord custody, the judge bade lam stand repri manded, and he concluded thus:— “You may go now, John, but (shaking his fin ger ad him) let me warn you never to appear here again.” John with delight beaming in liisey es,and a broad grin dis playing a beautiful row of ivory, replied : “ I wouldn’t bin here dis time judge, only de constable fotch me.” W oman .— So long as woman inspires love, she is not old. But what is it to be old? It does not depend upon the fact that we have existed during a certain mysterious number o f years which have been allotted to each of us. To be old’ is to have no longer a beauty or charm. If a woman preserves the attfactions of youth until she reaches the age of one hundred, she will be younger than the woman o f twenty who wants them. P. J. DOOL£¥, CATHOLIC BOOKSELLER, COR.
