DeMott, of | Lynbrook, Engineer of the Commission, to the conference. . Mr, has made Nassau County, before national nssem- blles different kinds representing or- ganizations engaged in civic work, and the county has always been commended for the work which it has done, * The letter from the United States Public Health Service Offcial, is as fol- lows: . TREASURY DEPARTMENT distance of 11 miles on the south shore, and no salt marsh mosquitoes on the north shore from Great Neck to Cold Spring, a distance of 17 miles. In pre- vious years they were very annoying in these localities. There are a large number of salt marsh island areas that can only be reached by boats, 'The Commission has 34 motor boats and 1 automobile truck for sailt transportation, The truck is used for tranmporting the men to the work on the upland or mainiand marsh. North Shore Upland The work of this district was carried on by a District Inspector, four in- pectors, a labor foreman, and four os On April 26th, the inspectors started a spring oiling of all the swampe from Great Neck to Cold Spring Harbor: 1,425 gallons of oil were used. This is ® new plan for mosquito control in Nas- sau County. Previous to 1 every spring the County was infested with a very heavy brood. of sylvestris, or ewamp mosquitoes. After the spring oflinga of 1919 and 1920 the sylvestria mosquitoes did not appear. 'This sen- son the swamp mosquito was almost unknown in the County. Our work is carried on under the general headings, Balt Marsh, North Shore Upland, and Sputh Shore Up land, therefore our report will follow these capitulations. Balt Marsh In the program of mosquito extermin- ation In Nassau County, the salt marsh problem was the first consideration, as it must be in any locality where there are meadow lands, because of the mi- gratory character of the Sollicitans, the mosquitoes which breed on the . sait marsh. The 800 acres of malt marsh scattered along the north shore of the county, and the 19,000 acres stretched along the south shore, in a strip about 17 miles long and 3 miles wide, were breeding to Invade the en- tire 300 square miles of the County in great hordes. Zhe Commission started at once to drain the-galt marsh lands.. 'The work began at the New York City line and to date has been extended as far east as Wantagh. The district is divided as evenly as possible into four sections. In each section, except one, there is a little over 1,000,000 feet of ditches to maintain, Rach section was in charge of an inspector with a crew of from 4 to 6 laborers. The fourth section at Hook Cretk and Inwood was in charge of an inspector and one ablorer, _ On April 16th inspectors and lnbor -| erews began working and patrolling in their respective sections. Sait marsh patrol work Is carried on from April 16th to September 30th. Great results have been obtained this year on. the malt marsh where ditches have been installed. A marked de- crease of malt marsh mosquitoes has been found from Inwood to Merrick, a Nassau County Mosquito Extermina- tion Commiasion, far as Mineola.
