Sothern first appeared as ptember 17, 1899; and he In his repertory there- conception and execution Danes character remain what they were in the first this century. Critics at that denied the embodiment au distinction; 'but, as | Mr. y, . although couldn't act, he nevertheless does act Hamiet successfully. No one can gainsay the dignity, sin- werity, Intelligence, and sustained ex- ecution found in Mr. Sothern's Hamiet. That the utter misery of the Prince of Denmark is not always forcefully uncommnmzed lacking; Mr. Sothern's admirable pos- itive qualities of clear diction-though sometimes too slow-of expert tech and of emotional expresalmn tempered and restrained by intelli- W: these alone would make his Hamlet distinctive. By giving us the best Malvalio in America last week, and the best Ham- let, this, Mr. Sothern has capably dem- onstrated again what we used to wit- ness often in the same week: that he is the most versatile actor, and has been for twenty years, in the American Theatre. Mr. Sothern's new production of Hamiet uses the best of the modern theory of stage hangings-nothing dis- tracting, everything blending and har- monious. The stage is enclosed with the neutral draperies, so successfully wsed in \Twelfth Night.\ The rear platform or inner stage customarily used for the ghost scene and for the ' act, has been discarded. In the \Room of State\ the thrones oc- eupy the centre rear.-a condition which places the \Murder of Gouago\ at one side, with Hamlet and Ophelia at the other. With this arrangement, the effect of the inner play is very visably recorded upon the king and the queen who occupy the thrones. -_ It was pleasant to have the scene at Polonious® house, in which Laertes takes his leave. And it was pleasant to be spared the advice of Polonious to his mon. Likewise the spectators were grateful for the omision of much of Clandius' praying scene. Tif his early performances of Ham- let, Mr. Sothern used the Fortinbras conclusion. Later, he omitted it. With this revival, Fortinbras, none to vir- fe, again appears; and Hamlet is car- ried out on the shields. This always makes a fitting and impressive conclu- sion. But the space used for it at the Shubert Theatre hardly sufficed. The work of Mr. Sothern's associates, like last week's playing, was uniform ly and uncommonly good. Alma Kruger gave a better performance as Queen Gertrude than she offered as Olivia. Mr, Banford is good to see and hear any- time, He made fine work of a thankless role, Lacrtes. The writer has seen nine Ophelias in the last nine years. Miss Marlowe was not among them, It had begun to seem as though Ophelia, too, was a thank: Jeas task. Miss Marlowe's personation brought back respect for the role as to see the three revivals: the fourth week-beginning October # -—o¢lcn| Phone Freeport 1252 The Mt.
