VOLUME II, NUMBER 30. ATONAH RECORD. A WEEKLY NEWSPAPER DEVOTED TO THE HOME INTERESTS OF NORTHERN WESTCHESTER. ^ATONAH, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N. Y., THURSDAY, DEC. 1911. SINGLE COPIES, FIVE CENTS. ANNUAL REPORT ON COUNTY JAIL Sheriff Doyle Has Reduced Cost of Living There, and . Gives Statistics. TOTAL COST FOR YEAR WAS $6,403 LOSE AT BASKETBALL Katonah Go Down Before Ramblers at White Plains. The annual report o f the care o f prisoners by Sherif f William J Doyly t o th e State Commission o f Prisons fo r the fiscal year Just ended wps tlnishc d Friday It shows that n t the close o f the year there are 116 male and 12 female prts - oj-jrs , and that the cost\ per week to boar d these prisoners i s J1.09. Sherif f Doyle having reduced the cost 1 7-10 cents during the pas t year. The tota l cost fo r feeding the prisoners during the year was $0,403.87 and the prison ers have been well fed . There were, a t the end o f the year, awaiting tria l (iU males and 7 fetna'ps. convicted were 39 mutes and 3 females. Admired to the jai l during the year were 2.704 males and 21 5 females and discharged were 2,77 1 males and 21.\) females. The fact that more were dis charged tha n wero received is brought about by there being some prisoners held over from last year. There were 2,477 white males and 140 white females admitted during the year, 29 1 colored males and 15 col - f ud females, 1,515 native bor n males and 13 0 native bor n females, 1.21P foreign bor n males and 8 5 foreign born females, C05 married males and 101 married females, 2,15 9 single males and 11 4 single females. Of those who can read and write c th<y>ij^were 2,504-males-and 191 fe males\ and 25 7 males and 2 3 females who can neither read nor write. These figures show that in this county the greater number of prison ers are white, more married than single men, more native bor n than foreign and more who can read and write than there are illiterate . Crime seems t o have heen greater as tho unfortunates i v.i.ct-c! li. years, since there were onl y 14 males and . females under sixteen >t:u >, ill initios and 10 females between sixteen and twenty-one, 90C malts and lOU females between twenty-one and thirt y years old, bu t there were 1,596 males and 9(i females over thirt y years ol d The occupation i n lif e apparently di d not keep the people fro m crime since there were people fro m many differen t walks o f lite , although the greater number are o f unskilled labor - er a o f which there were 1,102. There wore 1 8 bakers, 24 barbers, 2 8 bar tenders, S bellboys, 1 8 blacksmiths, 4 2 bricklayers, 10 butchers, 5 5 carpenters, SO chauffeurs, 7 5 clerks, 3 8 cooks, 1 editor , BP gardeners, 3 hod-carriers, 3 lawyers, 5 2 machinists, 10 merchants, 85 painters, 2 5 plumbers, 15 sailors, 1 sexton, 15 shoemakers, 25 tailors and 40 waiters. There \^er e 2 5 who had ro occupation. JURORS DRAWN FOR DECEMBER TERM. List of Those Who Will Serve as Members of Grand and Trial Jurors During the Month.
