K ansas C ity , Oct, 7.—The most horrify ing reports come from Platte county, in this state, and the vicinity of Park ville and Wal dron and the intervening country regarding a scourge which, it is reported, has recently broken out there. At first it was thought to be small-pox. but it is developing symptoms of even a more aggravated character than this disease. It is reported that although the disease has been raging for five days, eleven deaths had occurred and thirty per sons were sick. Of these only one man had shown symptoms of recovery, and he was not yet out of danger, HOW IT WAS INTRODUCED. The disease had broken out between Park- - ville and Waldron, two stations on the coun -1 cil Bluffs road, the latter nine miles from i this place. It was brought there by a tramp j laborer, who went from Kansas City seeking j work, and was taken sick and died. This j was ten days ago. It is said all who attend- j ed the funeral of the first patient have been stricken. Their bodies were covered with most horrible sores and fa irty rot and fester before death ensues. its terrible effects . It is reported that persons who had died with the disease cannot be lifted into the coffin. The flesh falls from tke bones, and, the bones themselves crumble and break when handled. CONJECTURES AS TO IDENTITY. Many of the citizens think it is the old black small pox, a very virulent form of the disease, in which the body is covered with black eruptions, and a few who are taken survive. Others who have seen it think it nothing more or less than the terrible black scourge which devastated countries of the east in the fourteenth century. A F r i g - f i t f u l A c c i d e n t . F a c t s A b o u t E d i t o r s . An Arkansas journalist gives the follow ing facts : When you write to an editor, send a three cent stamp. It will be a great curiosity to him. An editor’s veracity w\ll do to gamble on. He never lies, except for consideration, or in the plain discharge of his duties. Never ask an editor to drink, unless you have good credit or an extra dime. You might cause him a painful disappointment. When you shake hands with an editor don’t squeeze his fingers too hard, for they may be covered with valuable diamoi-d rings. When you owe an editor don’t pay him, for the shock might be too great for his nervous system. When you visit an office mix up the edi tor’s exchanges ; he has plenty of time to straighten them. Steal them if you want to he will not need them. Besides it is fashion able. If you are a mean man don’t mention the name of an advertising agent to an editor, for it will thrill his soul with delight aud cause him to smile. And when an editor smiles the bark peels off aud the air turns blue. —Unhealthy or inactive kidueys cause gravel. Mr. E. J. M inn, proprietor of the steam mills at the old silk factory, met with a very serious, but we trust what may yet prove to have been a fatal accident. At the time (Monday, 3d inst.) Mr. Mann.was oiling the machinery. To do this he stood on an ele vation (a bin). His shirt sleeve was caught by the line shaft. Mr. Mann instantly took in the situation and braced himself for it. His shirt was stripped from him. But he had on a very stout pair of suspenders. These were too strong to give way and Mr. Mann was carried over. He made one rev olution over the wheel (the wheel was go ing at a velocity of 350 revolutions per min ute). When he came out he was stripped of rU clothings including new and strong ud- der clothing, and was left with his stockings and boots only, a great part of the skin be ing peeled from the body. He was ren dered insensible, taken to the house and Dr. Layman called. Mr. Mann is of course a great sufferer. But the kindness of Lay man, will, we all hope, carry him safely through. Two ribs were broken, but what internal injuries have been inflictei, time a- lone can determine. The patient is cheer ful but complains of great pains and is so sore that the least jar distresses him. We all hope he may recover from the terrible wounds he has received.—Schoharie Re publican. The help already given to the Michigan sufferers, together with the promise of more has saved mauy a farm to its owner. Im mediately after the fire, speculators hurried into the burned over district with cash ex pecting to be able to buy the laud at trifling prices ; but the farmers, encouraged by the prompt assistance have declined to sell. Woonsocket, R. I., Oct 5.—Josephine Hinton, a beautiful girl aged eighteen years who came here from Beaver Bank, Nova Scotia, eighteen months ago, died Monday night under such suspicious circumstances that a young man who had acted as her lov er is now under arrest for suspected complic ity in the causes leading to her death. A l-' fred Thomas, aged twenty-three, also a No va Scotian, boarded at the house where the girl was employed, and for sometime before her death had been administering medicine to the g irl. i —One of the highest tributes (although paid unconsciously) §ver paid to the Irish race was the recent declaration by a Mor mon bishop that there was no Irishmen or women among Mormons. Never trust to appearance. It is the prosperous dentist who looks most down in the1 mouth, Congress voted Mrs. Lincolu $25,000 the amount of the President’s salary for a full year, at that time, ordered her name to be placed upon the pension rolls for a life pen sion of $3,000 per annum duriug her life time, and enacted that “all letters and pack ets carried by post to and from Mary Lin coln, be carried free of postage during her natural life. ” Mrs. Garfield is likely to be treated certainly as generously. A sentimental fellow at Wrightstown, Minn.,wrote to a girl that he would hang himself if she did not marry him. As he was a stranger, she took his queer missive as an insulting joke, and replied angrily that he would please her greatly by choosing the tree which grew near the window of her room, When she looked out next morning there hung his lifeless body. is th e m o st effectual rem edy for c le a n sing tho system o f a ll m orbid secretions.
