Garrison youth helps Ohio Wesleyan team Garrison's Rich Scully, a sophomore forward at Ohio Wesleyan University, helped the Battling Bishop soccer team to a No. 5 national ranking in the NCAA Division HI this fall. A former top scorer at The Taft 1 School, Scully earned his second letter with the 17-2-3 Bishops, managing 7 shots on goal. He had managed 4 shots and scored 1 goal as a freshman. The Bishops made their fifth consecutive NCAA playoff ap- pearance, bowing in the second round to eventual runner-up Bethany (W. Va.). They lost only on penalty kicks after 2 hours of scoreless play, including 2 over- time periods. They also captured their fourth consecutive Ohio Team of the Year award for Divisions II and III, trailing only Division I Akron in the ranking of all teams. They outscored 22 foes, 49-10. Scully is the son of Mr. and RICH SCULLY Mrs. Richard Scully of Rockhurst, Garrison, he is a politics and government major. Old Southeast New Year rites The tradition of ringing in the New Year at Old Southeast (Church off Rte. 22, next to the State Police barracks north of Brewster, annually attracts area residents who enjoy this rural custom at the National Historic Landmark. There is no charge and all are welcome. At 11:30 p.m., weather and road conditions permitting, trus- tees of the Landmarks Preser- vations Society will offer hot mulled cider to hardy bellringers. They remind all to dress warmly since the 1794 building is unheal- ed. Floodlighting of the landmark is a holiday gift each year from the neighboring Hipotronics Co. During this past year, memorial contributions from the family and friends of Nancy Harmon Rose of Mill town Rd., Brewster, provided the restoration of the bell sup- ports to enable the bell to swing freely, once again, rather than be struck by the pulled clapper as has been necessary in recent years. Old and young may give a pull to the rope and join in singing \Auld Lang Syne\ as the great bell peals 83 times for the New Year. rm •j»**P»«Ri Ml'j : E33 •S> IPV-Jfc.
