That was a possibih'ty ihoy woidd net allow tliemselves to con- template. One poor fellow npiK-nlinglyinformed ILo Warden that they were a x)arty of BCTon on tho boot, nil his own family ; that his wife was dying at home, ono child dead at home, and ho was search- ing lor the others. In a momont Mr. Brennan took his arm and led him around to inspect the terrible array.now amount- ing to thirty corpses. \My God,\ cx- •loimed tho i>oor follow, \iliere's my little Tilly,\ pointing to a child about eightocu months old. Forawliilo Mr. Brcauun stood holding his hand, and •Iter \ticketing\ tbe poor little thing silently drew him away to look for his •ther lost ones. Anouicr poor fellow was almost maddened as ho searched among the bodies for his sister, whose husband had only been dead threo months. Hho had been seated in the ladies* cabin, with her only child, a boy five yeoi's old, on her lap. They were both blown into tho river by the explo- sion, and tho child, on being rescued, ran home to his uncle, and exclidmod, •'Molhcr's killed 1*' It was too true; the child esciipcd unharmed; tlio mother, in whoso lup ho was sitiing, was wounded mortally. Tliere on the slabs of tho Morgue, with lightii around them, and tho jeia of pure water sprinkling their mangled, Kud sculdinl bodies, lay tlurtocn coqtseH. There was no room for more. Nt>aresl tho entrance wa^ a highly respectable young woman, 22 or 23 years of age, with clear cut, handsome features, drcss- •d in black, who hod been drowned. But for the pallor on her face, shu might have been thought usloep. A woman lay next to her. Tliis poor womin was so near her cunllncment tiint, when her body wax brought in, bcrchild was half boru. Lying halfway between and lialf npon thc»c two women was a little child about eighteen months old, fearfully scalded, utiil with her Iwdy dlBtended with Ben-waU'r. In the dead-house a<l- joining and in tho court-yard were rows and rowH of rough pine coflius; sume containing tlioHe drownnl or killed on the spitt, others UiosQ who had died in the hoHpitids and who, when stripped of (lieir clt>tliefi, presented a idekening sjiectucte. In this court-vsrd a man ap- peare<l with a small bundle in his arms, and said, \ Here's iiuotlier i>oor little baby.\ A man sprung forward, eryinj;, \ Let mo look at it;\ he groaned us though Ids heart would burst, and turn- ing to the hosjdtal man, Mud: \May I tiUte her away ? when did she dio ?\ ^* About five minutes ago,\ replied the man; \I'm very sorry, but you cin't take her uwuy to-uiglit.\ Tho jioor fel- low turned uwiiy, wiying, \ IVrliaps I'd bettiT not. It might kill her mother in her i>roBent state.\ The mother, too, was terribly scalded. A WHOLE FAHILT SaATTEBED. They all started ft>r Stuten Island Huuday, and were unfoilunate in catching the fatiil boat But ono out of this whole family escaped uninjured; that is tho seconil eldest boy. Tho eldest boy was killed and is now ul tlio Morgue, tho youngest boy is lout, and us no tidings have been received is no doubt drowned ; the little girl, whom tlio neighbors all si}cuk of in the highrat terms, is placed beeido her brotlier, while the father and mother are both in tliu hosx>itul scalded in u fright- ful manner. In his stni^lcs he had sprained his ankle and received a severe cut on tho head, but otherwise is now uninjured. A short distance from him was Alderman Fhilip- son. Both were taken out of tlio water by some boatmen ai)d landed at the Bottcry, Thoy soon secured a carriage, and were conveyeil to their hotel, where they have since been under medical treatment. It is now known that 100 persons lost their lives hy tho sad disaster, and that tho injured will number fully 125. TBS BOTIJER OF THE BOAI. Tho fragment of tho exploded liotlcr was inspected by hundreds. It* was a 1)icce of iron five feet in length, nlioul two feet in width, and weighed fifty- Rfivcn ^nuds. It liad been twisted al- most in a cylindrical form, aud each edge was rough and nneven, ns though a giant had torn it from its place as or- dinary strength would tear n rotten fabric. Ono of the edges had this ap- pearance much more marked than the other, and nwakeno<1 tho awe of the un- learned and experts alike nt tho tre- mendous power which had been exerted to rend it from tho boiler. This edge is difficulty to describe. If the reader has ever torn a cotton fabric, and noticed the ragged edge which he caused, he can form somo idea of tho appearance of this fi-agmeut And it was the general testimony of the experUi who examined it that the boiler h&o been mado of ^00 iron, was in proper condition for service when it exploded, and that the extremely thin ^)art ut the soam, which has been mentioned, was not resjionsiblo for the disaster, as if tlie boiler hatl first given way there, which it was claimed it luid not, it would only have leaked, oaumng somo annoyance, but no danger. The inference which these experts seemad to draw, ond which some of them dis- tinctly did draw, was thiit tho explosion was due to negligence, or, in plain word^, to a lack of water. One ouginocr of lonj; exi>erionce declared that ho is no believer in disiionsations of Frovidonco in connection with steAm-boIlers. Iii almost every case, he said, an explosion is duo to allowing the water to get too low and Buddenlly forcing in a hew supply, and he Itelieved that such had been the fact iu this instance. Engineer^, he continued, rarely ire brave enough to a(tcej>t tho risk due to their uogligonci*. If they allow the water to get low thCy will take the chanco of forcing iu a sup- ply of cold wat<T rather than take the hazard of a dischargo by admitting their fault, and insisting on tho delay necessary for tho boilers to cooL OFINIOK OF AN EHaniBE&. We give below the opinion nf an old engineer of thirty years exjiorience. He has tliorougldy examined tho exploded boiler. He finds tlio irou to be in very good condition, free from scale, and cui>able of sustaining double the amonnt of jireshure stated by the engineer at the time of the explosion. Ho would a^k. \ Was the engineer hurt ? Were uny of the firemen killed or wounded ?\ The engineer says ho was iu the boiler room a few minutes before tho explosion, tried the water, and found three cocks. He also buys lie lutked tho fireman how the water was. Ho replied, \All right.\ Our informant contends that no living bi'ing could have been in the fire-room ut tho time of the explosion without be- ing torn to shreds with the enormous pressure required to rend a boiler as thib oue is torn. His candid opinion is tbitt tlie)-e wiui but little wuti-r in the Iwiler, and that when the pump was put on, the natural couMuiut^neu was a tre- mendous pretihure of gas generated fur beyond the strength of the metid. If he had the three cocks of water, and hud more oteam than was necessary, where was his safety valve to carry oil the ex- cess ? Iteport says tbe vulvo did not work. If HO, he was doubly culiiuhle iu not removing the difficulty. A DESOLATE HOME. A Sns ENOINB.—Several inventors in different countries are nttchipting fo utilize tho heat of the sun's rays, and to construct a sun-onginc. Many people shnka their head at this idea, and ridi- cide tho very idea of Bucoeai. Bnt ihoy are certainly unacquainted with the stu- pendous force at disposal. To convert onn pound of water from zero to steam requires (137 centigrade units of heat. Tho researches of men of science have proved that every square centimeter of the earth's surface receives not less than 231,075 centigrnde units of tho sun's heat annuaUy., Forty per cent, of this is absorbed l)y tho surrounding atmos- phere, and Rixty per cent, reaches the earth. This gives seven centigrade unilii received per second on each ccutiraeler, so that ninety-one square foot of tho earth's surface would receive heat enough overy second for the vaporization of one pound of water. TBH TBOUBLB.—Mr. Hugh lioslio, a boiler maker, says it is just as eafty to make a boiler that it would be impossi- ble to blow up, an to make one that has danger continually lurking about it. It requires no mont labor, aud but litte ex- tra expense ; !mt he says steamlmat own- ers are grasiilng, and they will endanger the lives of hundreds t>f human beings to save a few dollars. Ho also says that no boiler is even comparatively safe af- ter it has been in use five years. Boil- ers on lioard some of our steamboats have been in use twelve ond fourteen f 'ears, and have as many patches as a leggar's coat. United States Inspoot^irB should be made to publish once each year, the condition and length of ser- •loe of every steam boiler in fhoir re- spective districts. A friend of ours was traveling while afflicted with a very bad cough. He an- noyed his fellow travelers greatly till pne of them remarked in a tone of displeas- ure, \Sir that is a very bad cough you have ? \ \True sir,\ replied our friend, \ but you will excuse me —it is tho best I have got.\ The tobacco crop according to tho fig- ures furnished by the Louisvillo Demo' erat, amounted last year to 272,800,000 poundH, valued ut m2,2Wi,3^.
