The skin - made from ~owhide shark cartilage and plastic - has been used -;o far to treat 10 patients, rloctors say. · . The skin has been under development for 10 years by l>r. John F. Burke of Massachusetts General llospital and Dr. Ioannis Yannis of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Without the new skin, Burke said, three of the first to recipients probably w~ul~ have died.
