A green j ourney back By Linda Leuzzi _____ BLUE POINT — There are words and images that stick to the recesses of the mind because they are future stories that must eventually be told. Sometimes they come from the tales of a relative. Sometimes , the compelling lure comes from yellowed photos of an event or accomplishment that strikes some kind of \ lingering recognition of the heart. Joan O'Sullivan-Lengyel , whose parents were born in County Cork and County Limerick , followed through on the sto- ries she 'd heard over the years about the police force in Ireland and decided to mount an exhibit called \A Tribute to the Irish. \ \I' ve always been interested in the uniformed services , police and fire , \ O'Sullivan-Lengyel explained during an interview at the Bayport-Blue Point Library, where the exhibit is currently featured. An annual exhibit by the Ancient Order of the Hibernians during March in the East Islip Library pushed O'Sullivan-Lengyel to create her own , which dep icts the police in her family in Ireland for the month of March , as well as other aspects of Irish culture. \Once Ireland became the free state (in 1922) after their up rising (in 1916), they had to form their own govern- ment , \ O'Sullivan-Lengyel explained. \The Metropolitan police was in exis- tence , but the Irish wanted their own. SCN/O-Sullivan-Lengyel with the Metropolitan police. \ In 1924 , a new police department was formed in the southern part of Ireland , Garda Siochana , which means Guardians of Peace. Lengyel' s great uncles , Steve and Nick , were part of the Metropolitan police; her uncle Johnny, was part of the transition , the Dublin Metropolitan police; and uncle Pat was part of the newly-formed group. Uncle Pat became somewhat of a celebrity. \In the early 1960s the police didn 't have any sports activities , '' O'Sul- livan-Lengyel said. \He formulated a rugby team. He was able to get the police from the south together with the north. That was frightening. They didn ' t know what the outcome would be. But the men remained friends and Uncle Pat was presented with a Waterford vase during that time to commemorate his own way of fostering peace. \My grandfather said to him either work for Guinness (the brewery) or go into the guards , \ O'Sullivan-Lengyel explained. \Back in those days , the Irish Free State had no economy and no jobs. \ O'Sullivan-Lengyel , who doesn ' t use the internet , corresponds with family via letter and traveled to get her research. *Tm more of a historian , \ she said. \I wanted to put something into the exhibit that wasn 't products. \ Her journey drew her to a memorable visit with 86-year-old uncle Pat , who lives in Dublin. \I visited See EXHIBIT on page 12 Joan O'Sullivan-Lengyel in front of her exhibit at the Bayport-Blue Point Library.
