111 th Year - Issue No. 6 ..... c-~ Division of Sayville FOrd . . oj~oy11illt Village \Long Island's Used Car Giant\ 102 North Main Street • Sayville/ NY (opposite the Sayville Fire Department) Your Hometown Newspaper Since 1884 February 23, 1995 Budlet set Sayville· projects 4.8°/o spending h·ike; district alms for cost of living tax increase by Antllony J. Howard The Sayville School District last week unveiled a proposed i995-96 budget plan that would increase spending by 4.8 per- . cent over the current school year. Details of the administration's $39,422,794 proposal~ a $1,821,982 increase over the cur- rent budget, were presented last Thursdaf night at a special public meeting, the first step in the dis-ess. After the Sayville school board adopts their final budget on April 13, district voters will go to the polls on May 2 to pass judgment on the board's plan. Last May 3, Sayville voters approved a $37,600,812 budget for the current school year. When fonnulating next year's budget plan, Superintendent Dr. Joseph Verdone said the goal was to offer a tax rate increase relative to the cost of living. 11 0ur goal this year is to bring in a tax rate equal with the cost of living, which is about three percent,\ Verdone said. ~~we anticipate being able to keep the tax rate in check for the district, and that's with less state aid.\ The district will receive about $12.2 mil- lion in state education aid this school year. Governor George Pataki's' state budget proposal, which still must be approved by the legislature, includes a one percent aid reduction for Sayville, or about $100,000. The district will make up that proposed decrease with budgetw-y Sli.i'pluses. Pric · But the annual uncertainty surrounding the state education aid figures is com- pounded by Pataki's plan to place a mora- torium on funding for building renovation projects not contracted for by March 31. Sayville is halfway through a $5.6 million renovation project that voters approved in late 1993. Work already complete is unaf- fected by the governor's plan. Port o•Call Marina repairs Because of the widespread hardship the governor's plan would incur, Pataki has The Town of Islip's Port O'Call Marina, on the Great South Bay In Sayville, has undergone extensive reconstruction this winter, with complete bulkheadlng and dock repair. The bulkheadlng planks you see are not the typical wooden lumber, but rather are made from recycled plastic for greater durability and environmental usefulness.
