Howard Islip TOWll has lowered the ll3.lumer on the apaltments at 105 Lincoln Avenue in Sayville. The Islip Town Board on Tuesday revoked the certificate of occupancy (CO) for the buildings at 105 Lincoln Avenue and 15 Overton Street, after deciding the landlord wasn't doing enough to rehabilitate the troubled facility. The board had given landlord Jerold Nemetz almost two months to confer with town planning officials to develop a plan to upgrade the crime-ridden apartment buildings. But after receiving an unsatisfactory report from Planning Conunissioner Thomas Isles and hearing Nemetz's explana- tion about the progress made, the board voted unanimously to revoke the CO. Councilman Norman DeMott, who initiated the action after multiple complaints from neighbors about noise, fight- ing and drug dealing, told Nemetz something had to be done. \Throughout this town, we have areas that are in trouble, I think because we didn't take proper action at the time,\ he said SupeIVisor Pete McGowan agreed with DeMott's assessment \If ~Ar. New.etz had come up to the boa..rd and showed t.lult he was acting to rectify the problems, I'm sure we would work with him,\ McGowan said \But he waited too long to address the problems ... It was just too little, too late,\ McGowan said after Tuesday's meeting. Nemetz did implore the town board to give him more time to remove troublesome tenants, five of whom were arrested two weeks ago on drug charges, and to continue his efforts to rehabilitate the buildings. \I've made very strong strides to remove many of the people who were creating distur- bances there, even though many people in the area may say it's not perfect,\ Nemetz told the board. \And I'd agree with them it's not perfect, but I'm trying.\ In November of 1981, Islip granted a change of zone request to convert what was a boardinghouse into garden apartments.
