I didn't eXpeCt it to be, but I guess a message was being sent. The public is very upset and angry and they want change,\ the 20-year assemblyman from Bayport said. he prepares for a new legislative ses- sion in JanuaIY. \1 think we put up a good battle but I hope he realizes that a message was sent to wake up, to get up and do som~thing about the taxes, for thepeo- pie,\ Murphy said, wbile on his way to work early the next morning. The voter anger behind the close results in this race, mdi the almost cat- aclysmic changes ~cross the nation, was because the cost of living has become unbearable for too many. \It's not just the taxes, but all the costs of living on Long Island, like the utility rates and everything else. Howard Lazio trounces Manjre in congressional race by Hank Shaw \Well it looks like a squeaker.\ Striding confidently to the podium at GOP central in the Huntington Hilton, Rick Lazio's opening conunent is met with belly laughs and thunderous applause. It's still early in the night for a Congressional race, less than 90 minutes after the polls closed at 9 p.m., yet the Republican Congressman is already declaring victory. The preliminary results have laio leading by more than a 2-1 margin in the polls, and a late rally by his opponent seems far from likely, if not impossible. Flanked by his wife, children, party leaders and campagn supporters, an elated Lazio stands before bundreds of the Suffolk GOP fai~, all crammed into the hotel's grand ballroom. He smiles broadly, announcing that he has broken tile ·sophomore jinx. \ Lazio told the audience of his plans for his second term\ ·calling bis and other Republican victories a \steamroller.\ \It's a tidal wave, and we're on the right side of it, \ he crowed Lazio's victory speech began a night of IlU\ior GOP victories in Suffolk, the state and the nation. Within ' hours, Lazio would be greeted with the news that fel- low Republican Mike Forbes, running in the First Cong!'essional District, would be joining him in a GOP-majority Congress, and New York would have its fll'St Republican governor in 20 years. At the moment, though, there was only applause for Lazio. By 10:30 p.m., about the same time Lazio was announcing his victory, Democratic challenger Jim Manfre's camp in Bay Shore has already started pick- ing up the trash and packing aW8N the sandwiches.
