Why are there no check-ups for gas customers? z o (6 To the Editor: People who have oil delivered to their homes at this time for the winter season have their dealer test their equipment. On the other hand, those who deal with LILCO for gas ~ .. e refused when asked to check their equipment. LlLCO tells us ta conta¢ a. plumber for the checkup, as if U is none of their busmess. 3 Why all the negligence with gas con- i sumers, especially dealing with gas? ..., That's important, if not more so. ~ AnnRydel ~ Brentwood m ~ Thanks for support of the Lupus Basketball Classic To the Editor: The Board of Directors of the Lupus Foundation, along with the event chair- men, Bob and Judy Maurer, wish to thank you for your contribution to the Sixth Annual Lupus Basketball Classic held on September 23, 1994 at Sayville HighSchool Lupus is a chronic disorder of the immune system that can affect any part of the body. JoAlln Quinn Executive Director Levy:· fool patrols were a great· success To the Editor: Rarely have I received more positive feedback from the public than with the return of police foot patrols to down- town areas. Years ago. the foot patrols were axed due to budgetary constraints. Thereafter, I began a fhree.year battle to bring the patrols back Due to fiscal constraints. the budget could not accommodate the salaries for full-fledged police officers. As a compromise, I recommended tile lISe of a part-time, seasonal force that would provide needed security at a cost of $11 per hour, compared to the nonnal salary for above this se3.S()W rate. At first, opponents said it was iJlepl or un_kable, but those seeking to dl) more with less persevered and pre- vailed. We fmaily convinced them tt) use these seasonals on a trial basis. It was an unqualified success. I understand that the foot patrols will be back next year, but there is Wlcer~ tainty thereafter. If you want the pro- gram continued, let the exeeutive and the ponce commissioner know your feelings. Take graffiti artists and put them to worj( cleaning II p our town To the Editor: Councilman Chris Bodkin's manhunt for graffiti vandals is commendable. However, what punishment will be meted to them if they 8fe apprehend- ed? A slap on the wrist? The law doesn't take this crime seriously. The total disregard for public and pri- vate property, left unchecked, leads to more serious criminal activity. The miscreants should be sentenced to something novel to most of them- work! Order them to graffiti and litter removal detalls. How much more insult must we endure before serious action is taken? The bridges on the Bayport-Patchogue stretch of Sunrise High~ are a sick- ening and deplorable sight with all the scrawl. How about all the litter and the grass that hasn't been mowed all year? One would think you were ~ost in the Bronx. The Sunrise Village north fence las become a billboard for these crimiruIs. I ~ppose we can look forward to noe of this as the new sound barrier ¥vali and bridges are erected on Sunrise. These nocturnal predators deligltt in initiating a freshly built or .paillted structure with their filth. Witness the nearly weeldy defacing of the Mont=iuk Highway underpass and the c()unty's efforts in covering it up. Take a gander at the former Beverage Barn at McConnel Avel\ue and the \Patchogue Thorn MeAn. These buildings were not painted a wee1c before the slime did their handiwork An outrage!
