' ~ ~~~~~~~~ i Help battle hunger on ~e e\tc\.\~ ~\Il~S'\ o : Long Island ~ z ~ With the air becoming crisp, leaves changing color and Halloween 5 and Election Day no more than memories now, most people are begin- ~ ning to tum their thoughts towards Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. ~ For thousands of Long Islanders, though, thoughts of spending those ~ holidays with friends and family at bountiful dinner tables are nothing ~ more than dreams and wishes. t- It doesn't have to be that way. The hungry are always among us. While the country's slow recover:y from the national recession has helped a number of us, the needy are always there, boom time and bad, recovery or recession. As the temperature drops and we approach the holidays, however, we're reminded of this. Food pantries rely ~n thls to help stock their shelves, for the winter and those parts of the year when donations drOp off. We should all pitch in to help. In the coming weeks, a number of groups and organizations will begin food drives in our area. Collection sites will crop up in a number of places, and local efforts will be publicized in this newspaper. Should you not find one of these drop-off sites, however, a number of food pantries and other organizations in our areaeollect food, and other donations for the needy, all year-round. A simple phone call to town hall or your house of worship will give you contact names, phone numbers and locations to drop off donations. Another way to help the hungry has probably stared you in the face almos~every week when you were shopping for food. A number of local supennarkets are assisting Long Island Cares in an effort to raise funds for food through a program called \Check Out Hunger.\ Display racks are stationed at all check-out counters in participating supennarkets, holding $1 coupons that will be added to your total purchase and contributed towards buying food for the needy. It's that simple. Whether it be through check-out coupons, food drives or donations to local pantries, we must all work together to battle hunger on Long Island .• . ',.'\ . :. . banana plantatiorls.
