Howard When it came to protecting her seven-year-old son from adults who prey on children, Ivalee Mallick was as vigilant as a parent could be. But on the morning of October 7, her son was almost grabbed from in front of the Mallick's Lakeland Avenue apart- ment by two men driving what she described was a tan Cadillac, with a darker vinyl top. The incident left her under- standably shaken, and concerned that all her efforts to pro- tect her child can be for naught \It's something I'll never for- get. I just want to tell all parents to watch out, because no matter how careful you are, something can happen,\ she said. That incident and another involving a stranger lurking around the Sunrise Drive Elementary School playground has prompted Sayville schools to send warnings home to parents about the occurrences. \He may have been doing nothing but collecting leaves,\ Sayville Superintendent Dr. Joseph Verdone said, \but it is our procedure to notify par- ents if something strange happens like this.\ Just before 8:30 a.m. on October 7, Mallick's son was wait- ing for the school bus inside the hallway door of the Lakeland Garden Apartments in Sayville. His mother doesn't let him wait outside because she fears incidents like the one that occurred. Her son waits inside for the bus hom to sound, then heads outside while Mollick watches from her window. This day the car pulled up and beeped his hom. Her son, thinking it was the bus, ran towards it. \NOImally Ijust look Please tum to page 18 .~-. - ~=.- ~--.- :-=- ;--- -~- =- .. -~
