St. Lawrence moved to Los Angeles to find work in the business world Though she flies back to visit sever- al times a year, this November St. Lawrence will return on her bicycle, part of a cross~ountry bike trip to raise awareness and money to battle AIDS. The 1982 Sayville High School grad- uate is one of six riders making the entire AIDS Ride Across America journey, starting in Los Angeles and visiting 22 cities before finishing up in Central Park on November 12. With publicity events and media coverage in each of those cities, the bikers are looking to spread the message of AIDS awareness and to fight the spread of the disease. The AIDS Ride is organized by the Los Angeles Center for Living and began September 24 in West Hollywood. \'The goal is to raise awareness as well as funds,\ said Debbie MacCarthy of the center for Living. \'The idea is to buDd a bridge across the country between the various AIDS organizations.\ MacCarthy explained that organizers hope to establish a nationwide information and assis- tance network between AIDS groups. For St. Lawrence, the bike trip is a test of her endurance, which may be boosted by the thousands of riders who will join them for short jaunts along the way. -As the only woman planning to bike the entire way from Los Angeles to New York, I have been training very hard over the last two months to keep pace with a core group of five other dedicated bikers,\ the 1982 Sayville High School graou- ate said Even her parents questioned St. Lawrence about the wisdom of mak- ing the daunting cross-country bike flip, her father said. MBut she's a very detennined young lady and come beD or high water, she's going to pedal her way across America,\ said Fred Hinze, who lives with his wife, Joan, in SaNville.
